Results, 23nd Annual (2018)Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge

The 23rd running of the Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge was held on December 29^th and 30th, 2018. We received 1012 logs – about 40 more than the previous year, and the first time over 1000! The growth of this contest has been steady over its life and we look forard to that trend continuing. 971 logs – nearly 100 more than last year’s record and getting ever so close to 1000 logs!! The activity level was similar to the previous year, with almost 1800 different stations showing up in the logs received. Of those 1800, just over 1000 were from North America and over 600 from Europe. A total of 8,720 man hours was calculated compared to 7,113 in 2017. This metric counts any hour that a QSO is made in a submitted log as a man hour.

Plaque Winners

A total of 24 plaques were sponsored for this event providing incentive for many to work as many guys as they could. To help make it easy to match up your score to the available plaques – please clearly indicate which plaques you feel you qualify for in the soapbox portion of your log. The hardest part of administering the plaque program is reading your mind to determine if you were running a temporary non-resonant wire, less than 30 feet high, shaped in the letter “W” when viewed from the air and at least two of the legs are used as a dog run. C = Category (CheckLog, Multi or Single). ASSISTED classified as CheckLog.

P = Power (QRP, Low or High)

RAW = Total QSOs in Cabrillo log.

DUPE = Number of dupes found in log.

BUST = Number of busted QSOs for wrong copied grid, busted callsign or not-in-log.

QSO = Number of valid QSOs.

PTS = Number of points - final score.

GRD = Number of different grids worked.

AVERAG = Average distance worked in km.

CALL = Best DX callsign.

Thanks for letting me try, but QRP to a 30 foot long Slinky Dipole (six Slinkys with a cap hat at each end, 35 feet up) just didn't cut it last night. 5W is -25dB relative to 1500W. A 30-foot dipole on 160 meters is roughly equivalent to to a mob So overall I was 40 db down from a theoretical strongest station. If you looked at a waterfall of the band, the strongest signals were roughly 40 dB above the QRN, which left me in the noise. Anecdotally, I called three dozen of the strongest stations. Early on, K0DEQ was roughly 2 S-units (12 dB) stronger than anyone else at my QTH. Later on, WD5R came up to the same level, but most other stations sounded weaker by then. It was a good experiment, and worth the effort to set up, even though I o - AD0BI

This was my first SP. I did this from my Santa Fe, NM QTH. My "Fallen L" antenna gets no higher than 35 feet, but works pretty well. Fun contest. - AD5A

Check log only. This was my first foray into 160 meters and rule six had not stuck with me. I had referred to the rules mostly to learn the exchange but at the time wasn't sure that I would be able to make any QSOs so didn't go much further. Antenna was a low 40 meter Carolina Windom with only 10 (ten) watts power--limited by TX foldback. So during the contest I used some cluster assistance. Not much to look at, though.... :-) Had fun. A new 160m groundplane on a top of a little hill was finished 2 hours before the Stew. I tested it portable from my car with 2.5 watt (FT818 with battery) ...later I continued at home with 5 watts on my INV L. Disaster, I was forced to use excessive delay to avoid Arc Errors with Acom 2000A amp thus needing many repeats. Then at 07:03 the Arc Faults cold no longer be compensated for and the station went QRT 75 minutes before our sun rise. - EI2CN

A real struggle here for much of the night. Ran search and pounce for the entire contest. Have a list of 57 stations that I heard with locators (repeatedly in most cases) but just couldn't work despite repeated efforts. Propagation to the E of here was poorer for me than last year but I managed some good contacts to the W into an area bounded by grid squares FN65, FM05, EM67 and EN67. This was toward the end of the night here. That said however, all stations to the W were a struggle to work - some great ears and patience from E coast DXers - thanks!

Great time. My ex INV L was in a tree, but we had to cut this tree. New INV L is now on a 18m spiderbeam mast. This year, I also built 2 BOG beamed to 045 and 290. The 160m station seems to work better now. I made my first contact with Z3 NA7TB !! Ok, I just saw his antenna and I know now why he received me !! Tnx to this team. Big stations like this can offer new DX for low pistols like me. Did not hear any UA9 or UA0. I was all the time searching and few times running. I have been paticipated on this contest since the first time. I paticipated on LowPower SingleOp. The condition was litte better than the last year. I used tranceiver 'K2,K3,KX3 on this contest. I use a K2 for wtach a very weak signal. I use a k3 for a weak signal in the very heavy QRM. I use a KX3 for a spped watch. I use my Micro Vert Antenna which length only 3.6meters. I built it on my balcony 2m*10m space of my condminiam. I set the transmiting speed of my electronics keyer upper 20 wpm. I like my Micro Veret Antenna for my top band equipment! - JE1SPY

I wasn't real surprised at what I could work with just 100W and my pipsqueak random wire, but I was really surprised to work KL7SB on first call even though he was barely audible, and even my best DX, KV4FZ (after a dozen tries). RT0F and many JAs were booming in but unworkable. The noise level in asia must be lots worse than here in an urban US location. - K0XP

K3CCR is the club station at the Collington continuing-care retirement community at FM 18OW in MD, just east of DC. I (N3UM) operated SOHP in the Dec. 2018 Stew Perry since W3GB was out of town. Starting at 2106Z I did fast S&P for 18 Qs in 17 min., answering loud CQs 1811-1835 kHz. I then ran well from 2130Z to 01Z. Rate went down, 70 to 60 and then 44 Qs/hr, but hourly pts/Q went up from 1.7 to 2.5 as I worked more-distant grids. So net result was, I got 101, 132, 126, and 127 points/hr 21-01Z. My first EU, a DL5, called at 2321 then G4 at 0016 and OM5 at 0022. S&P 01-02Z got me only 39 Qs but 116 points, since I got some 6, 7, and 8-pt US grids plus an OK at 14 points. Similar story 02-03, 121 points from just 41 Qs. BUT, this happy trend broke down 03-04Z; I got just 21 Qs and 71 points, my only hour with less than l00 points. Band was full 1802 to 1857 kHz, but nearly all were dupes. No EUs; I think they were all asleep! Fun again 04-0640Z; 21 more EU Qs and lots of W7 and W6 grids for 151, 180, and 202 points in those last 3 hrs, even at just 27 to 32 Qs/hour. I did both brief runs and brief S&P. Sigs got weak and rate died after 0630Z; just 2 more Qs. I was happy to claim 420 Qs and 1327 points, my best in SOHP, vs 361 Qs and 1186 pts in 2016. Great that Kp was 1, 2, or 3 vs forecast 4-5. - K3CCR

Always exciting to hear the band come alive during a contest - I turned the radio on and...signals! All over! While the good conditions of the days before the contest didn't hold up, there were plenty of QSOs to be made. I was called by a couple DL stations and worked a few more EU but there many audible from the Midwest. Noise floor was quiet - about S2 - so the big storm didn't cover anybody up at this QTH. No JAs were heard at all except for a mysterious "PM43" that I copied on a very weak station at a propagation peak. Well, the Spring Stew will be another opportunity for a run at EU and JA. This was my first Stew Perry. It was the most brutal contest I have ever been in! I had a plan for a 160m antenna that didn't work. I couldn't even tune it! I turned the power way, way down on my rig and used my Alpha Delta DXCC. It showed an infinite SWR. My watt meter didn't even move off the bottom peg! I was putting out way less than a watt at the transmitter!

I love the format of the Stew Perry. It is my favorite contest of the year, with the possible exception of November Sweepstakes. Conditions were great this year. This is the first 160M contest (in the QRP category) in which my calls were answered 90 percent of the time and very few repeats were required. Usually more than a few stations call CQ in my face, as I am sure other QRP entrants will attest. I had to keep checking to make sure I was only running 5 watts. The highlight of the contest was working OK7K. This is only my third EU country on Top Band running QRP. I was shooting for the "Top Score QRP, from RF deprived Grids EN00 through EN79" plaque, but I will also accept cash or money orders. - N9SE (Sorry – the Boring Amateur Radio Club does not issue monetary awards).

First, I'd like to throw my results into the hat for the plaque NQ6N is offering up " Highest score by station working other stations who are running 100 watts or less". Curious how all that fits on the plaque! Had fun as usual. Band was pleasantly quiter (low noise floor) for a change, allowing me to hear and work most all west coast stations I heard, or heard me. Unfortunately, no EU was heard at this antenna challenged station this year. Good news is this was my best TBDC for most Qs at 271 (pending the dreaded log checking). Also most grids worked, 134. Hopefully, log checking will be kind and my overall score will end up being being a personel best. Always lots of fun, to see how much damage I can do on 160, or is that the other way around? Antenna again this year for TX and RX was W8AMZ shortened half sloper, 67' long at 35' high apex, sloping down to 4' off the ground, ENE. After a day of yard work, I decided to see what's going on in the Big Stew. Wow, that was fun! My only antenna for 160 is an Inverted L with some improvised radials underneath and for what it is, I really enjoy using it. The band was relatively quiet, with no considerable QRN, but a lot of pretty loud signals, even from the West Coast and I was able to slowly run for a couple of hours. Thanks for the QSOs! - NN7CW

Operation from 300ft boating pier over salt water in St George Island. The antenna was inv L composed of 40ft Spiderpole baloons holding the horizontal part. Battery operated FT-891. The antenna seemed very good initially until drizzle caused baloons to fall. Soon the laptop died, rapidly drained by CAT connection. - NO9E

Started out fun. Then as I had an NP2 on the hook and he was sending my exchange, some brainless fool started sending his call (3 times and then a ffew seconds later, 3 times again) totally obliterating my info. NP2 started again, and so did my - NR4C

It's been a while since Frank-ON9CC and I participated in this contest, one of our favourites! Last time was in 2015 were we used 5 beverages between 200 and 300m long about 2m high (4 reversible and one single) and a K9AY for RX; for TX a 18m top loaded vertical (spiderpole). In that contest we noticed we could hear many stations that were not hearing us at all... Our TX signal was not strong enough, we concluded. In the past years the antennas changed to some extend. We replaced the 18m top loaded vertical by an INV-L hung up along a 26m spiderpole and used several rolls of chicken wire to lower the ground resistance. For RX we added a Hi-Z 4-8 Pro 8-Circle RX array and removed two reversible and one single beverage. Mind you that all RX and TX antennas except the K9AY are temporary. Between mid of Feb and some time end of Nov beginning of Dec the field behind Frank's house is used by a farmer who keeps cows. We were lucky by a period of good weather to set everything up before Xmas. The days before the contest the band was so alive. Frank worked KL7 and the state of OR as ATNO's and heard several JA's and many US states in the morning hours. Would we have that in this contest? Frank started at 17:29Z. I arrived later (I had something in the oven that I promised to bring and it took a little more time to complete than expected, but I think it was worth it, haha). As of 19:15Z we both manned the station until we stopped. The gray line was over VK2-VK4 and entered KL7... We constantly tuned across the band from top to bottom and the other way around. Nothing from those corners, the furthest station heard and worked (vy loud) was UA9LDD. He picked us up immediately. Just after 20:30Z I started my S&P round at 1810 and heard JA1YBK very clearly (both on the 35deg bev and the 8-circle), who was calling cq many many times without working anything. Of course I tried to call him but without luck. We hoped for his sunrise peak but needed to wait. Until his sunrise (21:57Z) we checked and checked but he never got stronger and our attempts to call him remained unsuccessful. I wonder if 10-12dB more output power would have done it... Anyway, it was good we heard him because if you don't hear them you will never work them, right? Being in the LP category forces you into S&P mode. We still tried to call CQ between 21-22Z and especially during the first minutes we logged 2-3 QSO's per minute. That was a nice surprise. Of course that dried up quickly and after 50min 39 stations were logged on the same frequency, with a few 9 pointers. The Inv-L must be radiating an audible signal with just 100W :-) At 22:34Z finally some real DX, N5DX, soon followed by W2GD (who was loud throughout the whole contest!) both worth 20 points. As time progressed the first station from the mid-west was WB9Z a bit before 00:00Z. That took some time to complete. From that moment on it became a real struggle. Hourly rates of 12, 3, 10, 9, 8 followed. Then we got our ODX (24 points): K9OM in the tip of FL. Nothing from the west. In fact the furthest west we got was EM45 square... I suppose propagation was not good enough for those DM-DN-DL squares. From the Caribbean only KV4 and NP2 were heard and worked. Let's see how it is in the CQ160CW. We compared the 8C with the bevs a lot and there was no favourite. At times the 8C would be better, then the bevs. So we will continue to use both systems. Being able to select different RX antennas through the RAS8x2 on both transceivers is a big help and will remain part of the setup for sure. It is such a delight to finally start a contest by switching everything on, sitting down, open the log program, select the contest and just start, hi! Seeing some results from EU (e.g HB9DDO who also used a vertical and an 8C), we worked a lot of North America, surprisingly... It lifts our spirits for the next contest where we'll enter with the usual 1500W max. Station consists of an IC7800 and Orion2 (interlocked). Antenna for T(R)X was an inverted-L on 26m Spiderpole. RX antennas were a Hi-Z 4-8 Pro 8-Circle, a 300m reversible beverage 315/135 degrees, a 240m reversible beverage 35/215 degrees and a K9AY. CU in the CQ160CW. 73! Aurelio, PC5A & Frank, ON9CC - OT6M

Propagation was not good here in JP80. We had a first try with inband, finishing up a relay box just hours before the contest. The new full-size 4 Square was used for TX and RX, with two experimental short RX verticals for the inband. One short tuned vertical and one R7000. We need a better RX antenna to be able to work other than EU. Bad propagation and low activity made us go QRT two hours early. K3+K3+AL1200+4SQ - SK3W
