Results, 13th Annual (2008) Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge
Boring Amateur Radio Club – K7RAT
Boring, OR 97009 k7rat@@kkn.net
The
2008 Stew Perry Contest was held on the weekend of December 27th and
we received 694 logs. This is yet
another healthy increase in the number of logs received from the previous
year. The Boring ARC would like to thank
each and every one of you who support this event with your activity and log
submission.
This
year, we had a close battle for the world’s top score from opposite ends of the
earth. Last year’s winner, Al, CE1/K7CA
and multiple Stew winner Clive, GM3POI both posted scores over 6,000
points. It is interesting to note that
these two stations didn’t work each other!
After log checking and bonus point addition, Al’s further distance from
North America and
In the
multi-operator class, F6KNB posted the highest point total, followed by a fine
score from JA3YBK.
Since all of the score calculations
are done by the log checking software – there is nothing your logging software
had to do differently as a result of these changes. Note that your Cabrillo log does not have QSO
points included. They are totally
computed by the log checking software.
One of the most talked about
aspects of this contest is the plaque program, administered by Lew Sayre, W7EW
and enabled by the generosity of the plaque sponsors themselves. The amazing amount of creativity in coming up
with some of the categories is only matched by the fierce competition amongst
the participants trying to get a piece of hardwood for their shack wall. We do try to spread them around by not giving
any single person more than one plaque.
Here are the plaque winners for

Total Zone 16 QSOs - |

· Instead of a plaque, this award will receive a Royal Flying Doctor’s Hat from VK6VZ
We are still looking for the winner of the Old Timer’s Award. This was originally conceived as going to the oldest person who made at least 50 QSOs in the Stew. We currently have one person in mind who is 78 years old, but we find it hard to believe there isn’t someone out there who is at least 80 years old who put 50 QSOs in the log. Here is your chance to help the Boring People out and let us know you are out there. Send an e-mail to tree at kkn.net and be heard!!
And now for the scores. Each line item indicates the category (S or M
for single/multi-op), Power (H, L or Q), the grid operated from. The RAW QSO total is the number of QSOs found
in the log. Dupes and busts are removed
for the QSO total. The total QSO points
is in the PTS column and the number of grids worked in GRD. The best DX callsign
and distance is shown. Finally, the
number of QRP and Low power stations worked is shown. The QRP stations you work get a X4 multiplier
and the low power stations get a X2 multiplier.
QRP and low power stations are determined by the logs we received - so
you won't get this bonus just by putting /QRP in a callsign.

100% Search & Pounce. Great Contest!!! Antenna was Inverted Vertical.
The antenna was installed in a well hole. The antenna had a intial problem
because the radiating element was below the local water level. So the
radiating element had to be installed into a pcv pipe to insulate it from
the water which was shorting it out. The antenna had 40 short 25ft radials.
The theory for operation of the antenna is by injecting the signal straight
into the earth the signal reflects of the iron core of the earth. This
cause signal to propagates around the earth. The short radials are used to
inject the signal into the earth at high angle. If the radials are to long
the angle of radiation is to high and signal misses the iron core.- AC1O

QRP Search and Pounce. My first Stew Perry 160m and Murphy struck hard.
Decided to run QRP. Had severe winds that brought down the top of the tree
that my DX-A was on. But still have my Inverted-L. Started the contest and
after a few Q's my SWR went thru the roof. Tree limb came down and brought
down the horzontal part. Fixed it and strung it back thru the trees (all
antennas are tree supported here) though it's now got a pretty good slope
towards the ground. Then the sump pump died so had to fix that. Then back
on the air, couple more Q's and SWR screams upward. Go out, another branch
has taken out the L. Fix it in the rain with a flashlight gripped in my
teeth. (can't get the kids to come out and help Dad fix his antenna). Now
the inverted L has become an inverted "U" with the lowest part of the
antenna supported between two sawhorses so it won't touch the ground. Back
on the air again. Really regreating deciding to operate QRP. Granted I don't
have an Amp but 100 watts never sounded so good. Then as I'm trying to get
more than 40 Q's, my feet start getting wet. The water heater has sprung
a major leak and I'm now sitting in a lake. So with that, ends my first
venture in the Stew Perry 160m challenge. It can only be better next
year...right?????? - AK9I

Band was quiet but propagation was not great. Why do first world stations
have to insert an AC hum on their signal. This is an obvious shame for
those nations amateurs.- EI2CN
The band was weirdly quiet - not a peep of QRN anywhere. European stations
were easy to work, US stations were rare enough, but again quite easy to
work.

Nice contest as usual, conditions were not bad, but not as good as I
expected. A few nice DX in the log, a few JA and a bunch of US
(thanks to the K9AY!) signals were very weak sometimes. Some bad
thoughts to the stations who came and call CQ on my frequency when I
was listening to weak signals with out asking QRL :-(, I lost a few JA
like this... Ok, I think I end up the contest with my best scoring, I
had fun and that's the most important. See you in 2009! 88 from Mau - F8BPN

Enjoyed it - had fun. - G0MTN
This
is a higher score than I made in 2003, when I won
way down the listings this year, I think. A sign of how Top Band is
developing. Good propagation to
to the best I have known. I missed out on VK, and a problem with the K9AY
here caused me to lose some time early in the contest. Some signals of
very
poor standard spoil the event for us here in
noise modulation on the signals. But a great contest - thanks for all
the fun. - G3BJ

First time entry in SP, and really enjoyed the contest. Grid squares are a
nice check and the scoring system really adds to the mystery. The wrap-up of
this contest should make an interesting read. Topband was in good shape, and
signals were strong, especially from the east coast. Great contest and I'm
looking forward to next year! 73 - K0NE
BIGGEST THRILL WAS WORKING CE1/K7CA. THAT'S A LONG HAUL FOR FIVE WATTS FROM
I had the telnet cluster window running to keep track of the RAC and
RAEM contest activities. It was interesting to see how many operators
were spotting stations in the TBDC contest. I suggest you consider
adding an assisted category to accommodate those who don't read the
rules (and DQing or changing them to CHECKLOGS). This is a fun contest. - K0RC

The digital radios for contesting saga continues. I had intended to debut
my 8-regular-octagon phased array, but the software is not yet ready.
So, I operated with the linear array (the one I've been blabbing about for
a year now) and the Beverages together. I put the phased array in the
right ear and the Beverages in the left ear. Since the phased array is
integral with the software radio, which inherently has some latency
(time-delay) compared with the analog radio, strong signals always sound
weird with lots of echoes. Although I'm getting used to that sound,
it still causes some delay for my brain to "sync-up" with a signal. So,
my apologizes to the all too numerous people that had to repeat their
callsigns to me. Slightly weaker signals just come through one ear only.
So, if I asked for a callsign fill, you had a strong signal. When I get
the circle array working, I intend to set up two copies of the software
so that each ear can be fed from a different direction. This will
eliminate the latency problem and allow some "diversity reception"
experiments. I also want to experiment with having the software determine
from which direction a signal arrives and steer the array automagically.
Maybe then I can sound less like a lid. I did get the "transceiver" mode
working between the software "receiving system" (antenna and radio are
inseparable) and the IC-765. This way, I could S&P by merely clicking on
the next signal on the waterfall display. Also, when there is a gap
between signals, there is a good place to try a CQ. Running QSOs when
the radio is a computer is an interesting exercise. The right hand
presses message buttons while the left hand presses antenna steering
buttons and tweaks the receiving passband. When the caller finally
emerges from the noise, then both hands converge on the right-hand
keyboard to type in the callsign. At the conclusion of the QSO, the
left hand has to put the antenna and passband back in the default
configuration for the next caller's likely direction and frequency
offset. So, I need to hack sdr-shell a little to add some keyboard
shortcuts to choose one of several "standard" passband setups.
Are there any commercial radio designers reading this? This year
conditions seems reasonable but activity seemed to be down. I'm not
sure who was missing, but the band was not crowded and rates were just
a little slower. I do have what now seems like a permanent severe
pulsating noise to the west which truly obscures reception of W6s and
W7s and even a lot of W9s and W0s. My apologies to people to my west
that I had to struggle to receive, despite a nice fat, bright line
against the almost blizzard-like speckles on the waterfall display.
I'll have to get a screen capture and throw it up on my web site.
Strangely, when the wind and rain really got to howling around 1000z,
the strongest gusts would dampen the noise for a while. This suggests
that the noise comes from power lines. Anyone have any thoughts?

First time in this contest - I think it will be one of my favorites. The
scoring system more closely corelates with ability. Finally I have a
chance against the east coasters and their eu multiplier advantage.
Unfortunatley my in line antenna tuning capacitor failed with 4 hours
to

the grey line crossed the

It's been long enough that I'm eligible as a "first-time" QRP entry,
though my one hour score is likely at the back of the pack. With an
IC745 at 5W and only a short vertical (HF6-V + TBR-160) on a metal barn
roof, everybody in my log earned their 4 point QSOs! - KR0U

EVERY TIME I TUNED ACROSS THE BAND, IT SEEMS TO BE SPARSELY POPULATED.

A foot of wet snow on the ground thwarted my intentions of adding radials

Had some local QRN, but was able to hear anyone who could hear me, I think.
Wish there were more KH6's on for SP, seems like a natural; almost all Q's
are > 9 pts, and I'd think the all-water path to the west coast would be
an advantage over the SA guys. Still, Thanks to KH6LC for the 36 pointer,

My second time in Stew Perry; first was Dec. 2006. Conditions were better
this year, especially to EU and SA. In 2006 I worked 6 EU stations, none
in SA, and 1 in PAC, KH6. This year, 11 EU stations, 5 of them between
22 and 23 Z, just after sunset here. I also made a fair number of US and
VE west-coast QSOs. As a result, I got 90 more basic points (before LP
or QRP bonuses) this year even with 2 fewer QSOs. As often happens when
propagation is good, the activity level was reasonably high. Worked CE,
not always heard on 160. - N3UM
The last (and only) time I operated the Stew Perry was ten years ago
(1998). Different QTH, different everything. My score was better that
year. But I did work better DX this year. Still a lot of fun. I'll try
not to wait another decade before working this one again. - N4GU

The SP got off to a good start Sat morning with a decent rate for a QRP
station on 160m in near daylight hours. My best hours were 1500 (21 Qs),
0100 (21), 0400 (15), 0200 (14), and 0700 (13). All my other hours were
under 10 Qs per hour. 0300 was the worst, at only 3 Qs. As you would
expect, West Coast grids were worked the most, with CM87 and CN87 giving
10 Qs each. All others were in single digits. I almost worked JA. I
heard one calling and got a ?? out of him, but he couldn't copy me, so
I gave it up as a bad job. At least I had two HI QSOs and one FM07 in
VA. I was pleased with the way the point values of the Qs worked out.
For 3 pts I had 45 Qs, 6 pts 32 Qs, 9 pts 40 qs, 12 pts 3 Qs, 15 pts
5 Qs, 18 pts 3 Qs and 24 pts 3 Qs. Could have been a great deal worse :-)
My new rotatable terminated delta loop got its first trial by fire.
It worked well, as I could make a local noise source disappear in its null.
Of course, this then exposed all the lesser noises that had been masked
by the major noise :-) Fortunately, I have a stable of receive antennas
with different noise reception characters. I use a full size Flag loop
aimed east. Also a forty meter dipole up about 40 ft, and another very
low 40m dipole at 10 ft. I used all these antennas during the contest,
as for any given signal one antenna would be better than the others.
I may have to buy a new coax switch, though, as it is beginning to wear
out from all the switching. My impression was that there wasn't much
activity, as I never heard any signals east of the midwest except when I
worked W4MYA in VA. Later I saw a post from an east coast station who
claimed
he hadn't heard anything west of the
that describes the conditions we had. I enjoy the SP. I just wish it
were a two nighter. Thanks to all for the Qs. 73 and Happy New Year. See
you in the next contest. The Little Station with Attitude - N6WG

Wx was very warm for Dec, so I worked on a new 40M antenna several hours
and didn't have a lot of energy left. Condx were very good and at least
a dozen Eu answered my CQ's including TF3KX along with many stations in
the far west starting around 01Z. I had one run of S52ZW, VE7CC, K0PK,
VA7CW, S57UN, VA7XX and the VE7's were really loud! No JA's heard at
sunrise and no other DX. It was fun, but unfortunately the Stew seems
to have sucked the life out of 160 DX, for a while, condx have been
below normal ever since. Best rate hr 01Z with just about exactly
100 Q's. Please calculate score. - N8II

FIRST TIME ENTRY - I love Top Band! I'm new to 160 and having fun improving
my antenna and meeting the 160M contest gang. I'll be back! - N9DD
Well, weather conditions made for a noisy band most of Saturday night,
anywhere from S5 to S9 noise. Goal this year was to hit 1000 raw points,
and 200 plus Q's. Made both of those goals, but it was a struggle, as most
of those Q's were 1-2 and 3 pointers. Didn't have but a hand full of 6
pointers to the west coast. Band conditions sure did not favor 100 watts
to a low 35'apex short (100' total length) dipole. (Alpha-Delta DX-LB)
One leg running SW over and on top of my roof to 10 feet off the ground
at end, and the other leg running to the east to a maple tree almost at
35 feet, (see attached pictures). There were some loud signals on the band,
VE7CC, and K7RAT. I don't know what you guys run for 160 at the K7RAT
station, but I heard your signal all throughout Saturday night into
Sunday morning, sometimes peaking 10 over S9. I worked you guys so early
in the evening Saturday night, with such a strong signal, I thought it
must be a pirate!! I am sure there were a lot of Q's I missed due to
the high noise level here. Around midnight, when the cold front went
through, the winds really picked up and that was worse than all the
heavy rain noise earlier. Always a lot of fun to play in this contest.
I really like the distance scoring and the grid square exchange. Now I
hope my 1000 points holds up and there are not too many deductions!
I hope there are lots of QRP stations in my log to boost up that score!!!
Station conditions: TS-2000 100 watts to a Alpha Delta DX-LB short

Another pedition to Kustavi. This time with two operators for five days.
Spend also time with IOTA EU-96 pileups. We used Elecraft K2/100 with
Commander HF2500 amplifier and proven T-vertical antenna. We also had
K9AY receiving antenna, but it was not necessary to use because noise
level with small transmitting antenna was low. We can hear same stations
with K9AY too. It was accidentally on-line for some time and we ran also
DX stations using that. You can see more about this operation in
http://personal.inet.fi/surf/oh4mfa/oh4jt-1.htm. Many thanks to all
who worked us. It was great fun! 73 and CU next year! Happy New Year

This one contact was worked accidentally - I was not switched into

he replied immediately. Is there any award for highest points per qso

Conditions were surprisingly good! Had CE1, GM, etc. answering my CQ's.
Worked into Europe as late as 0900 UTC, which is some 2 hours PAST Eu
sunrise! Noise was minimal on the night of the event, too: I was worried
because the band was VERY static-laden the night before - VE3CUI

CASUAL EFFORT BUT GREAT FUN AND GREAT CONDX. - VE3MGY
Freezing rain caused problems for us. The inverted L transmitting antenna
was severely detuned and our pennant became deaf. We had to operate below
1825 kHz for about the first half of the contest. Conditions were fairly
good, though not exceptional. Our best DX was CE1/K7CA at 8204 km. My
ancient Drake TR 7 has now operated in all 13 SPTBDCs. How many more will
it (or me) be good for ? Thanks to the Boring people for an enjoyable
contest. - VE3OSZ
I had a lot of fun doing the ARRL 160 band Contest earlier this month.
I was tuning across the CW portion of this band to a Net I regulary
attend and I noticed a lot of CW activity. When the net closed I tuned
back to the CW band. I listened for a few minutes then plugged the Bug
and Paddles into my Great Little FT-757GX and I had a lot of fun with
this easy going Fun Contest. I already took part in the Canada Winter
Contest earlier this weekend. - VE7BGP

This is the first time ever using a 1930's (pre octal tube) radio set up.
a 35/51 RF amp, a 35/51 regen detector, and two stages of 56 audio. I
needed the RF stage to allow more regen oscillation, and therefore less
high signal overload the 41/parallel 42 amp MOPA worked well, it was the
receiver that had the problems. Good to work the Stew Perry again! - W7DRA
Max power used was 4 watts. What a pain.. - W7FG (we are all sorry to
