The
Stew Perry contest continues its steady growth.
There were 620 logs received this time around, nearly a 20 percent
increase from last year and moves this contest up to the second most popular
international 160 meter CW contest behind the CQ 160 contest. The Boring ARC would like to thank each and
every one of you who support this event with your activity and log
submission.
It has
been shown several times that if a station in the Southern hemisphere enjoys
good propagation to North America and
In the
multi-operator class, KH6LC had the highest score in the high power category,
VE3OSZ for low power and N2CW in the QRP category.
Conditions are already hot on 160
this season, and there will once again be a warm-up event in October. The rules are the same as the regular event,
except that we are not running the plaque program, or accepting paper
logs. A simple write-up with the scores
and soapboxes will be posted before the “real” Stew in December. The warm-up event is on October 18/19th
and the main event is on December 27/28th. Complete rules can be found at http://www.kkn.net/stew/.
There was a fierce competition from
There has been an ongoing debate
about the power multipliers for QRP and low power stations. We have made some minor changes over the
years – by adding multipliers for working QRP and Low power stations. The Boring ARC has decided to make another
change starting with the 2008 events.
The QRP entry multiplier is being reduced from four to three. Also, the low power entry multiplier is being
reduced from two to one and a half. We
feel that these changes will better level the playing field between the three
categories and remove some of the incentive for big stations to reduce their
power levels – thus making it harder for small stations to work them. These changes do not affect the multipliers
that you receive when working a QRP or Low power station.
Since all of the score calculations
are done by the log checking software – there is nothing your logging software
had to do differently as a result of these changes. Note that your Cabrillo log does not have QSO
points included. They are totally
computed by the log checking software.
One of the most talked about
aspects of this contest is the plaque program, administered by Lew Sayre, W7EW
and enabled by the generosity of the plaque sponsors themselves. The amazing amount of creativity in coming up
with some of the categories is only matched by the fierce competition amongst
the participants trying to get a piece of hardwood for their shack wall. We do try to spread them around by not giving
any single person more than one plaque.
Here are the plaque winners for

If you feel that you qualify for one of the unclaimed plaques, please let the Boring ARC know.
And now for the
scores. Each line item indicates the category (S or M
for single/multi-op), Power (H, L or Q), the grid operated from. The RAW QSO total is the number of QSOs found
in the log. Dupes and busts are removed for
the QSO total. The total QSO points is in the PTS column and the number of grids worked
in GRD. The best DX callsign
and distance is shown. Finally, the
number of QRP and Low power stations worked is shown. The QRP stations you work get a X4 multiplier and the low power stations get a X2
multiplier. QRP and low power stations
are determined by the logs we received - so you won't get this bonus just by
putting /QRP in a callsign.

As usual, the

Location JO99BA - Muskoe island. - 8S0W
TS-480sat, inverted-l, microKeyer, N1MM logging. Chris very graciously put up an antenna and played host in Oakhurst. It wasn't a serious attempt, but we wanted to get on the air and have fun. We'll certainly be back next year, and hopefully break 100! - AE6RF
Category Search & Pounce - AC1O
Had a blast doing the Stew QRP. The IC-740 worked great. - AF9J
Before 22z I was just running 100W because of TVI trouble with my neighbor. I was using no RX-Antenna. TX/RX-Antenne is a inverted L with 20m vertical - DG1CMZ
5 Watt QRP (FT817) and a poor antenna (Windom 21m long, 8 m high matched through an iductivity with tuner Z11 for 1,8 MHz. Nice contest again, with a few QSOs more than last year. - DJ3GE
Single OP CW Only High Power - DJ4KW
Worked with 100 watts into my homebuilt Magnetic Loop. - DK2BJ
I am so surprised what is possible with so small rig, see you all next year again - DL5CL
ICOM 728 max100w and dipole 2x30m in 10m up. Heard much of US/VE up to s7 between 0500 and 0730z, but no replay because of QRN over there. - 73 "Jo" DL5KUD
FT-847 with an indoor antenna. - DL5SWB
Enjoyed the good propagation and worked my next to last zone with OA4/N6XQ! Called KC7V and W6XI for a while but couldn't get through. Out of enthusiasm or confusion I worked 33 minutes overtime. Please remove the last five QSOs in my log. I did not want to create a problem for my QSO partners. - DL6RAI
Starting 15z with good rates. At 18z I saw the SWR is extremely bad. Trying to repair the vertical in darkness, but no success. Gave up at 21z. Next day - DL7ON
This year my full time score. Had a lot of fun again, HNY es gd dx! - DL7ZZ
Rig: FT817, <5W out, long wire) - DM1LM
Hi,
first Test from
Very average conditions. Enhanced cdx towards NA around 00-03 UTC then faded down and came back again around local grayline 06-07 UTC. - F6EPY
Too windy to put up inv-L. Struggled with 100w and windom. Heard W, VE, ZC4 but no QSO. - G0MTN
This is my first entry for the Stew Perry contest. It is a struggle with an S-7 permanent noise level, and just an inverted V antenna. I could not stand more than an hour or two at a time, or I would end up either deaf, or demented! - G3LDI
Just my usual casual entry, no big dx from my small station, but lots of fun. Conditions reasonable, low noise, plenty of activity. See you next year. 73 Dave - G3YMC
Good fun - plenty of activity - reasonable conditions. SD logger performed well - G4AMT
Only a very small operation, but delighted to work sixteen W/VE stations. My 'elmer' G6BQ who was a great topband operator would have been amazed at how much DX can be worked these days, all co-channel - G4BUO
Use as check log only due to use of remove RX antenna experiments - G4BYG
I like the format of this contest something different to send and I like the distance element. My first try at this contest just a fun entry really. - G4DDL
DELIGHTED
TO WORK MY FIRST EVER
Thought I better send this in as a check log. One QSO only made with TF4M.. - G4OBK

Huge amount of EU activity. Condx fair to
CTC 146, DL-CW-C 110, EACWC 277, GACW 783 - HA1DAE
Just joined the activity for a few hours I found that my wire on the roof is useable on 160M too. The noise level was +5 dB over S9 all the time that does not seem to be ideal for a top band contest. Even though I got much surprised hearing so many stations that could have been logged sooner or later. It was a real fun to take part from the heart of a metropolis with a piece of wire. Many thanks for Qs, see you next year! Rig TS-530SP 80 W into end-fed wire, 21 mtrs long ant above flat roof. - HA2MN
Rig: Icom IC-756 (100W). Ant: Vertical(28m), Dipole. Longest distance: W4AN 8481Km. Nice contest! Next year agn! - HA8BE

Yes LOW POWER - 100watts. Hi.. Got sleepy and didn't stay up all night.. Just getting too old.. Went over the time so lost a couple of QSO..sorry... Best ears N1EU to pull me out... GMCC'er worked, K0RF Chuck, W0ETT Ken, W0MU Mike, KV0Q Bill, N0KE Phil if I missed some let me know..going to bed again..Hi..PTL Bill - K0UK
Rig was Elecraft K3 to a stealth inverted L hidden outside my condominium. Best DX was KH6LC who called me at the same time as a W1 station. Good thing he stuck around. - K1EP

Using just 100 watts to 60 foot end-fed stealth wire hidden in trees 15 ft above ground, another victim of Fla. CCR's. Tnx to all who dug me out of the QRM. - K2EUH
First SP Contest, had lots of fun. - K4DGW
Conditions were good but very bad QRN here. Tnx to all for the QSO's and repeats. 73, Bob - K5BG

Excellent conditions Saturday night. - K5SM
Spent first 7 hours calling CQ on 1828. Was able to watch the
Patriots-Giants football game at the same time. Activity noticeably dropped while the game
was on.
Donald AE6RF put a bug in my ear about entering Stew Perry; we have room at our vacation QTH for something like a decent antenna. I'd never worked 160m - K6DBG
I got inverted vee up just in time for the contest. - K6GEP
I experienced heavy local static due to East Coast Storm Conditions, so I ran high power (500) watts to improve the SNR for others. It was difficult to work the DX and QRP guys due to noise bursts. - K7CMZ
I spent a couple of hours per four days prior building a new 160-m inverted-L antenna. Apparently, it works because my 100-W signal got out well. I had the pleasure of incurring the wrath of a "DX Window" Policeman, so the antenna must be working very well!- K7MM

This is one event I really enjoy, as the exchange is more meaningful than many other contests. Didn't put in as much time as I would have liked but still had a blast. Thanks Tree. - K7RE
100% S&P Enjoyed this format over CQing all night. Total QSO's not much different than running them on a specific freq. Not as many signals on the bands it seems this year. Still many rigs out the with bad key clicks. Heard UA0LCZ, VK6VZ and other juicy stations but they were S&P and I could not snag them. Band was extremely noisy in the middle of the night deep QSB was evident during the entire event. Thanks and looking forward to it again next year. This station is west of 100 degrees West longitude and above 8000 ft. I certify that no spotting of any type was used in this search & pounce effort. - K8FC
Only ran low power, so was amazed to have four 30+ point QSOs, including OM5ZW who called me! - K8MR
Once again enjoyed the Stew Perry. Local QRN was annoying and my RX antennas were crippled by a big windstorm so DX was limited. The SP could use another 1 K operators. I did my part and got one on. HIHI. Thanks Boring ARC for the contest.- K9FO
Some real good operators out there to pull my "peanut whistle" signal out of the mud! Thanks, guys and gals. - K9JU
FB Condx....100+EU, 5 JA! - K9NW
I decided to grow the vertical by quite a bit (one night only!) and take my chances running QRP this year. It is a little disconcerting to not see the power needle bouncing up where it normally does. Surprisingly I had very little trouble working those that were loud. The antenna and radials were still located within a 20m X 10m space but I added a balloon supported wire at the top of the vertical to bring me up to 130 feet in height. I also cranked the keyer down to 17.999 wpm and kept it there, which was a mind numbing stretch for me and those that I called. That speed was up
.001 wpm from last year but I felt like I needed the extra edge since I was QRP. By the way, someone should sponsor a plaque for world worst computer generated CW. I would win it! My PC was running very slowly and would augment the spacing of the already slow, slightly unintelligible characters. I guess I should have rebooted the system before the start of the contest. Oh well. A lesson for the future. The only DX that I heard on the K9AY loop was KV4FZ but I have to admit that I fell asleep early and missed any chance at the juicy stuff at sunrise. Maybe it was better that way as I doubt I would have been heard. Conditions were pretty good here and it was quiet, aside from a few clouds moving by to the north that crackled a bit. I really enjoyed this second helpin' of Stew in 2007... Any chance for a third? Can't wait until next year... - KB5NJD

Ice storm has ruined 160m setup and I had to work very hard to get it back up in time for the Stew Perry. Very glad I did. - KU1CW

The
intermittent power line QRN that plagued me during the ARRL 160 thankfully left
me alone for Stew. As a consequence, was
able to work some patient folks east of the
Does 30 minutes for rest period count? - LY2IJ (Yes – it does)
I had spent many days organising a /P trip to the local farmers field with a 3/8 wave vertical on 160M. The day started so well nice sunny weather Then the wind started to blow extra hard sending the Helikite (helium filled balloon with Kite) out of control. After dismantling the station the Helikite was taken down, as I was placing it in the back of my van a gust of wind took it out of my hand and was never to be seen again. a costly weekend for me. A small entry from home in the end. Only a very low dipole at 35 feet. - M0AAA
QRP Rocks! - N0TT
Band got very noisy after midnight. Had a lot of fun anyway. - N0UY

Yaesu ft-817 at 5 watts to an inverted L. Not enuff radials. - N3RN
Great time from 0000 to 0400Z - then the thunderstorms hit. Courtesy was high as usual for top band - a pleasure to hear a nice orderly band with stations every 400 Hz or so. - N4GG

Fun contest again this year. Lots of stations were on in the evening but only the dedicated nuts hung around for the early morning session. Long live Stew Perry! - N7IR
Spent too much time watching the Giants & Pats play. Some good ears on the DX side to hear me. Best DX was UW2M. - N8BJQ
Decided to run low power after calling several people QRP with no luck. Glad I did, lots of QRN. - N8VW
FT-857 running 100 watts to 160M CF Zepp up 30 feet. Had S-9 noise level during the entire contest. - N9AUG
STARTED OUT GOOD. CONDITIONS SEEMED GOOD.
DESPITE THE AWFUL NOISE, S-9 ALL THE TIME, IT WAS SURPRISING THAT I WORKED AS MANY AS I DID. GOTTA FIGURE OUT A LOW NOISE RX ANTENNA. - NG7Z
Only put in a cuppla hours. Went DXing after 100 Q's, so this is a check log. - NI6T
ASL 4600 feet - NT6K
We
changed my radio with Vlada OK1DKZ, so just limited
time QRV. Sri, no QSO with JA. I didn't
want to contribute to 15 kHz mess where all stns QZF.
When I tried QSX 1910 as in old times nobody replied... Good long time opening

with scoring to distance and skipping the useless contest RST
Sorry for weak signal in

I
decided to get on the air day before the contest in the hope that increased
activity might result. I easily made
more than 100 QSOs in about two hours, and at times the band sounded like 20 meters.
I heard stations all over the
Not much time to get on this year but it was still fun to give the gang an FN03 multiplier (it didn't sound like there were a lot of FN03's around this year!). Hope everyone has a GREAT 2008 until the time of the NEXT Stew Perry Challenge 12 months hence!!! - VE3CUI
Conditions were better than in 2006, but not up to the standard set in 1997. We improved on our score from 2006 by about 30% as a result of more DX QSOs. - VE3OSZ
GOOD OPENING TO EUROPE BEFORE SUNSE UNTIL THEIR SUNUP BAD PERIODS OF QRN NOT MUCH PACIFIC HEARD PLEASANTLY SURPRISED TO BE CALLED BY ZL3IX GETTING TOO OLD TO OPERATE THRU THE NIGHT - NOT A NIGHT PERSON! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR - VE3QAA
I
had a great time in the SP2007 but was concerned about what seemed to be
relatively few
Band noise was up and down a lot and propagation was so variable it was actually sort of weird from EM17. Heard JA and EU stations, but couldn't get through the East coast KW's to work any from here. Too bad contests aren't limited to 100 watts to level the playing field for those who can't afford amplifiers. - W0EB
My best score yet... Wish I'd put in some more time! - W1JQ
Sorry I couldn't be on more, but busy family stuff going on. - W3BBO
"The
Stew" keeps getting better. At least for other people.
I managed to reach last year's QSO total in a mere 8 hours, but then the
SWR on the phased inverted Ls shot up and that was all she wrote. At least the beverages worked OK --well
enough, that is, to hear both Europe and the West Coast working
Head/Chest cold; coughing resulted in computer/human foul-ups. - W3TDF
Just listening around mostly. A few QSO's for fun. - W4KAZ
First time running high power and Murphy struck. Crazed flying insect attacked final amplifier and destroyed it after OSO at 0427 UTC. Continued on at low power, but QRN became so loud and continuous that I took a nap. QRN was worse when returned to fray. New pair of inverted L's feed in phase worked great. Felt loud before bug died. DX included UW2M, UU4JMG, UA2FF, GM3POI, OM5ZW, DL5AXX,S57UN, CE1/K7CA, S59A, I4EWH, LY2IJ, HG7A, OM3BH, DJ5MW all HP. Also logged OK1DX and S57UN running LP at EU dawn Tnx! Hope I copied info ok, QRN from storm was very bad. Enjoyed the new antennas and running HP. TNX QSO's, 73 Joe - W4SAA
QRN and a new power line noise hurt us. Apologies to those we couldn't pull out of the noise. 1kw, 1/4 wave vertical, DXE receive 4 square - W5TM
Elevation 8083 feet MSL - W6SX
Things went well until 11:30 local the amplifier gave up the game. Oh well next year - W6XI
Someday again we'll have EU here during the contest... - W7AT
This is the absolutely last contest i will work being rock bound. but i have said that before........good set up, 6ag7/2x807 at 40 watts, a half wave wire up about 25 feet, a bc779 with a triode mixer beating 1.8 Mhz up to 3.5 Mhz to get some band spread out of the 779. all contacts at 10 WPM using a j38 key - W7DRA
My log needed a lot of editing to add the signal reports. The rules do not require RST and nobody used it in the contest. - W8IDM
Conditions were the best of any SP. First to go the full 14 hours. - W9RE
I ran the Ten Tec Argonaut 5 again this year. It was fun all the way. I appreciate all of the patient operators who pulled me from the QRN. - WB0CFF
Unihat vertical coax stubs burned up after a few q's. - WB4SQ
This was my first time with this contest. I was running <5watts into a pair of phased verticals spaced at 66 feet. I operated for about 6 hours.. I was hoping for 12 contacts but was happy with 9 - WD0BGZ
A pleasure to finally hear EU after putting up a loop RX antenna. - WO9S
