Results, Tenth Annual (2005) Stew Perry Topband
Distance Challenge
Boring Amateur Radio Club – K7RAT
Boring, OR 97009
k7rat@kkn.net
The tenth Stew Perry TBDC contest was the biggest of them
all. We received 479 logs - which is a
big jump in activity - and the scores keep going up and up. The improved conditions from the sunspot
minimum were evident, although they still were not up to the excellent
conditions we saw during the first couple of events.
It would seem the stage is set for the eleventh one to smash all
records - as this season's conditions seem to be getting off to a good
start. Clive, GM3POI, who ran away with
the first couple of Stews, seems to be warming up with four QSOs in the N6TR
log already this season.
There were some soapbox comments about the minimum off time. We used to have a rule that tried to make you
take your off time in one or two big chunks - so you did not have to operate
during the daytime in order to feel like you were competitive. After trying to make the rule easy to
understand, we finally gave up and removed it.
However, not having a rule seems to create just as much confusion - so
we have decided to make a simple rule that should clear it up:
Operate for a maximum of 14 hours. Off times are 30 minutes minimum and a maximum of four off periods are permitted.
Hopefully that
will be the last time we have to tweak the off time rule.
We were pleased
with how the 2X and 4X multipliers worked out for LP and QRP stations that you
worked in your log. This seemed to close
most of the gap between the power levels.
This will become a permanent rule change.
Don't miss the
soapbox comments at the end of this write-up.
While we didn't have a plaque for the best whine this time, there were
some worthy entries submitted.
One of the most
talked about aspects of this contest is the plaque program, administered by Lew
Sayre, W7EW and enabled by the generosity of the plaque sponsors
themselves. We typically have some off
beat categories that enable those without the "best signal on the
band" to get some hardwood. This
year was no exception with awards for search and pounce only, sending less than
18 WPM and the best DX within 30 minutes of local
Here are the
plaque winners. Most of these have
already been sent out, but a few of them had some problems with the engraver,
and will be sent out in November. If you
are aware of any errors, please contact tree@kkn.net. We do not give out more than one plaque per
station. Many thanks
to all of the sponsors.

And now for the scores. Each line item indicates the
category (S or M for single/multi-op), Power (H, L or Q), the grid operated
from. The RAW QSO total is the number of
QSOs found in the log. Dupes and busts
are removed for the QSO total. The total
QSO points is in the PTS column and the number of
grids worked in GRD. The best DX
callsign and distance is shown. Finally,
the number of QRP and Low power stations worked is shown. The QRP stations you work get a X4 multiplier and the low power stations get a X2
multiplier. QRP and low power stations
are determined by the logs we received - so you won't get this bonus just by
putting /QRP in a callsign.
Line scores that are in bold will receive a certificate. Stations that received a plaque are not
eligible for certificates. Our thanks go
out to Jim, K1PX, for generating the list of certificate winners, printing and
mailing the certificates.

Condx not extraordinary, but quite OK. JH4UYB was heard very loud before sunset but station
was not ready at that time. Caught him later quite easily. Also another four JAs made it
into the log. Nice surprise was being called by DU9/N0NM and later by VK6VZ/6
at his sunrise. Found DU9 later calling
CQ in vain for a while. I hope he got a few callers as he was loud. Heard VQ9LA
very nicely too but he only called a few stations (and I was not among them).

First time entry and had nice relaxing few hours. Band
conditions no great shakes considering the state of Sunspot Cycle. Used my 40m
corner fed delta loop as rx ant and it certainly
helped pull a few weak
ones out of the mud. Antenna is top fed (loaded whip)ontop of 60ft vertical. Radio is an Icom 746Pro. Pity this contest is held during the hectic
holiday shopping/events period of the year and I'm sure doing so restricts the
number of potential entries. I suppose you can't please all the folks all the
time. Used N1MMLogger software and found
the bandmaps very useful for going back to busy stations and
picking them up at a later time. I will be back for next years

I was going to start out complaining about how there
was no "Whine award" sponsored this year, but I figured there was no point since it wasn't sponsored. I was also going to go
on a rant about how my wife got a new puppy on the day of the Stew and how the
distraction made things very difficult to effectively operate the contest. Again, no point of pontificating about things that no longer really
matter. The Stew: What can I say, my fellow operators? The Stew
was a fantastic experience for me this year.
With the sponsoring of the S&P award, it made for a lot more
stations look for me while I lazily sat on freq running weak ones. Speaking of weak ones, there were a lot more
this year. Either people are using the QRP mult or
they are trying to win that category from that awesome guy who is sponsoring
the award for short verticals under 40 feet tall. He sure was a smart guy for
sponsoring that award! As for me, I
don't happen to qualify because my antenna is 40 feet, 1 inch tall. But all of
the radials and antenna fit into a space 20m X 10m so maybe I have a shot of
that spiffy Flying Doctors of Australia hat that VK6VZ offers every year! I wish someone would sponsor an award for a
replacement of an RX antenna switch because I wore mine out last night. I guess that is a good sign that everything
is hearing in the direction that it is supposed to. I gave up early because I was extremely tired
but I did improve my score and QSO totals from previous years by just a little
bit so it was worth it. Listening on topband, even with quiet conditions and rx antennas is still a little fatiguing, especailly when you are having to really dig. I always enjoy this contest and hope it
continues for a long, long time. See you
in the Stew 2006.. I'll be sure to bring a little
extra meat! Special thanks to all the
organizers and sponsors! - KB5NJD

I 'Reserved' the 2005 SPTBDC weekend with my wife
months ahead of time -- and in November our plans 'changed' so that we'd be
away that weekend skiing in Whistler, BC, with her father. We'd be leaving
during the contest day on Saturday, arriving at the ski area about dusk. A week
before the Stew, I scrambled to find a station that would allow me to operate
in BC, and was able to do so -- thanks Bob Eldridge VE7BS, only about 45 mins from the ski area.
Three days before the contest an inspiration hits me that perhaps I can
just run my home station remotely through the internet; I make sure the
firewall is set up, get a dynamic DNS entry, install some software to manage
the dynamic address, and set up a RealVNC server on
the laptop controlling the computer. I set up two free VOIP accounts, and use
VOIP Soft-phones on my laptop at home, and the one I'm taking with me. I spend Wednesday night testing. I use a USB
relay control interface (Ontrak ADU-200) to control
an Ameritron RCS-10 switch to allow changing the
receive antennas under computer control. THE ADU 200 even has a watchdog timer
function! I modify the nice Windows application to control the antenna
switches, watchdog, and PTT. I test it... a lot. I call the Hotel on Thursday
to verify that they have high speed internet, and they do. I use the setup on Friday night, testing to
make sure there are no RF problems with the internet connections etc. On
Saturday morning, I work the first 1.5 hours of the contest until the band
shuts down (last station heard (but not worked) KH6ZM, hearing him work NL7?).
I test my remote setup again after the band closes. My son has a birthday party
to attend, until

This was my tenth Stew Perry contest and, as usual, it
was an interesting challenge. On Saturday night the Boring people served up the
SPTBDC and then on Sunday night, very appropriately, my wife served up stew for
dinner. I found conditions quite variable. It seemed as if the ionosphere was
like a patchwork quilt with good patches and bad ones. Some signals were very
strong (K7RAT was "boring" in here), but others were surprisingly
weak. I worked quite a lot of west coast stations and a dozen or so Europeans.
But conditions were not up to the standard set in the 1997 event. Thanks to the

I just managed to put up a new Inv Vee
at 60ft, hours before the contest. First few QSO's at the sun set, proved
antenna and coonditions to be good. K1GUN worked long
before his sunrise. Then a great pile up of JA's. As soon as the contest
started, things have changed. Very few answers to my CQ's so
S & P for most of the contest. Band was rather noisy for most of the
time. Signals were rather week. Very few NA stations heard and they came with
week signals. Same with Eu.
As for the JA pile up ... it never came back. As most of the QSO's from this
part of the world have to be a DX, with a poor propagation it was a difficult,
hard work, all the way throughout the contest. I have put 100% effort and I
have improved my 2003 score by 3.5 times, but still there were only 37 QSO's in
the log. A bit embarrassing, but ... I had 80% of them as a DX's, 20-30
pointers. Best DX was K9DX at 17502km, but many worked, were above 14,000 km.
New countries: NL7Z and KH6/N6KB.
Stations from the neighborhood: There were 4 other VK's heard/worked:
VK3IO (2653 km), VK6HD (335km), VK6VZ/6 (384km), VK6ABL (10 km). There were 2

I would like to enter the "Top Score, Antenna
< 40 feet tall" category. I used my 40-meter double-extended Zepp antenna at approximately 35 feet in this contest. I would
like to have a better antenna for 160, but this is all that I have right now!
Conditions must have been excellent for the top band this year. I worked a
number of new European countries and seemed to have no trouble getting running
stations on the west coast even, which is a first for me with my modest setup.

I thought conditions were very strange since it seemed
my Beverages were working OK but my vertical TX array was not getting out at
all toward EU. Very few called me and I
often had to switch to my inverted-V to call those I heard. I just thought it was some sort of weird high
angle propagation, which we've had a lot of recently. Later I discovered what
was really happening! My 3-el parasitic
vertical TX antenna can be beamed in 4 directions but is not
electrically switch able. I normally set
it NE and then go outside to switch it NW after EU has faded out. My inverted-V
is usually sufficient to work stations in other directions so manually changing
array directions once a night is not a problem.
When I went out to switch it NW at 0745z, I was startled to discover it
was already beamed to the NW! No wonder so few EU were
calling me and I was getting so many calls from the West. I switched it and promptly had about 10 EU
call before the band went out in that direction. Oh well...I won't make that mistake
again! :-) Thanks for the rule change
regarding QRP. I've not entered this
contest for several years in protest over the points
inequality in QRP exchanges. By the same logic, why not 2X points for
completing Low Power QSO's? I like QRP
and LP too, but if everyone gravitates to it, we'll discourage DX
activity...which would cause Stew Perry to roll over in his grave! - W4ZV [We
