The 14th running of the Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge was held on December 26/27th 2009.  Like a fine wine – the Challenge seems to be getting better with age.  With activity on 160 meters reaching peak levels due to the extended sunspot minimum, all of the 160 meter contests have seen a dramatic increase in activity.  Scores that used to be viewed as impossible are now common.  Most of the records in the contests are only a year or two old anymore.

A total of 821 logs were submitted – which is up about 15 percent over last year.  Our log checking software indicates just over 2000 stations were active handing out their grid squares – up 300 over last year.  With the increased activity and fairly good conditions experienced during the contest, scores were much higher than last year.  There were a total of 77 single-op scores over 3000 points!!

Boring Amateur Radio Club knew things were good when UU4JMG was heard coming through 579 just after sunset.  That’s a 20 point QSO that was easy to put in the log.  Near the end of the contest, VK6VZ was able to punch through and work some North American stations.  VK6DXI was also heard in North America.  ZL3IX and CE1/K7CA helped hand out those rare southern hemisphere QSOs, and ZL1AZE and VK3IO also worked a few stations.  Other than a couple of QSOs from CT3DL, no activity from Africa was logged.  The W1BB call sign was running high power this year; so many stations were able to log Stew’s old call sign.

There were different techniques used to generate some of the highest scores the Stew has even seen.  Jeff, K1ZM, used the QRP category with his 3X multiplier to put together a score over 9000 points!!  Those who could work Jeff were treated to a 4X multiplier – which really added to the scores of the Europeans and west coast North Americans he logged.  Some of his QSOs counted for 64 points!!  Other 64 point QSOs were logged by some east coast stations who worked QRP Europeans.

Toni, N0NI, used the low power category to generate over 6000 points from his 500 odd QSOs.  Toni was able to give some Japanese stations some 40+ QSO point QSOs.

In the high power category, Vlad, UA2FF, used the UA2FW station to put an impressive 784 stations in his log for the top high power score.  Al, CE1/K7CA operated from the other end of the world, making an average of over 20 points per QSO to come in second.

The log checking team was treated to a horse race during the weeks after the contest.  Every time a new QRP or Low Power log was submitted, they could not wait to rerun the results and see how the top scores would shift as a result of the bonus points.  Clearly working those weak stations is an important element of putting together a competitive score.  Most scores jumped up by 20 percent as a result of bonus points from working LP and QRP stations.  There is an exponential effect from being able to work QRP stations from a great distance.  From the west coast of the USA, you can get 30+ points for working QRP stations on the east coast.  W4ZV, VE3TA and K1LT managed to put 34 QRP stations in their logs and several other stations had 33.

In the multi-operator class we had large efforts in the USA, Europe and Japan.  The team at W2GD took first place operating from the WYRS FM radio location.  Put 39° 38' 24" N, 74° 17' 32" W into google.com/maps and see what you get.  Impressive QTH!!  The second highest multi score came from JA3YBK, who seemed like a beacon once the sun set in Japan.  RL3A came in 3rd place, followed by K6ND/1 and KH6LC.

Once again, a massive array of plaques was available for special achievements.  Many thanks go to Lew Sayre, W7EW/W7AT, who not only sent out last year’s plaques – but also organized this year’s plaques.  Once again, the log checkers took some liberties with the assignment of plaques to the various scores, so nobody received two plaques.  If there is someone out there who sent in a log and is younger than 18 years old – please let us know.

The 2010 Stew Dates are as follows: Pre-Stew: October 23, 1200 UTC to October 24, 1200 UTC.  Stew: December 18, 1200 UTC to December 19th, 1200 UTC.

If you would like a copy of your log checking report – they are available by sending an email to tree at kkn dot net and asking for it.  The log checking team improved their log checking software this year and are now checking the on time for single-op logs.  If you operated more than 14 hours, the QSOs that took place after your 14 hours were used up will not count towards your score.  Note that off times need to be at least 30 minutes long in order to count as off time.

We would like to thank those who submitted their log in electronic format.  This makes it much easier to administer a contest like this.  If you log with paper, you can use the WA7BNM Cabrillo web page to enter you log after the contest.  The best way to find it is to put “WA7BNM Cabrillo” into your favorite web search engine.

I am not a contester, but I have always liked the idea of the Stew Perry Topband Challenge. I have given out a few contacts in years past, but this is my first time sending in a log.  I have been away from Topband for about 10 years and my new K3 has reawakened my passion for this marvelous band. I ran 100 watts to a 16 meter tee loaded vertical but unfortunately, I had not serviceable receive antennas, since they were damaged in heavy snow and ice.  Still, the K3’s DSP was effective and I had a lot of fun, even if I am not the night owl I used to be (I do admit to sleeping a little after sunrise in Europe).  I operated about 90 percent S&P with a few CQs to try and catch those fellows I could not catch by S&P.  Looking forward to next time with better TX and RX antennas.  73 to the hardy denizens of the Topband - AB4I

Search and Pounce - AC1O

This was my first Stew Perry contest and the second time ever transmitting on 160m. The first time was the night before, to make sure the extra bits of wire I clipped to the ends of the double zepp would tune to 160m. I tried a few times to call CQ, but with the FT-817 at 5w into the zepp whose ends were at best 5 feet from the ground it wasn't working too well. I think two people came back to me. Search and pounce techniques were the best choice. Or, as I came to know them, search and tune gradually until receiving a ?, then send my call again and again. The best was a Canadian station, thank you, VE6WQ for your patience. I sent my call so many times, I dreamt it last night. Big thanks to everyone that heard me, because they did all the work. I had a lot of fun, and I will save the clip on wires to do this again next year. - AE5OV

My 1st Stew Perry, and the 1st REAL (and successful) test for my just 6 m high K6MM helical vertical (for TX&RX). My goal was 100 QSOs, and I ended with 199 QSOs, 127 grids, ODX K3ZM 6663 kms, 6 x NA. QRN was S7-S9, as usual. Except for one good run, calling CQ was disappointing. After midnight the QSO rate dropped dramatically, NA stations were hard to get, and the last QSOs were an ordeal... should  have gone to bed earlier ;-). Thanks a lot for the great event! - DK8NT

USED STEW PERRY TO CHECK CW SKIMMER PERFORMANCE IN CONTEST ENVIRONMENT. WORKED WELL FOR ME. SP WAS RELAXING AND I ENJOYED IT ALL. - DL1AMQ

Again big fun, but was disappointed with my result after a furious start (first 6 hours 185 QSOs, but last 6.5 hours only 75 QSOs). After some hours into the contest, i was sure to easily beat my last years score of 690 points, but rate terrible dropped after 0 UT. After not making a single QSO at around 05 UT with permanent CQ and even a try of S&P, i packed my stuff and went home after "only" 12.5h of operation. Slightly more QSOs than last year, but slightly less points. Great activity in EU, at times the band feeled packed from 1810 to 1850. Only 7xNA, 1xUA9, all else was EU. Personal "Dumbest Nuts"-awards go to G3BJ (called him many times at the beginning), OK7XX, OM7LW and OK2ZU, which were all 59+60 and did not show the slightest reaction to my calls. Anyway, not much points lost there. It was big fun, still, and i will participate again in 2010 for sure. RIG: TS850, Heathkit SB-1000 @ 500W, FD4 in the noisy city, Win-Test - DL1ELY

We enjoyed this year's TBDC in better condx than any of we had ever experienced. Before the test, we had installed over 50 radials for TX antenna. At 1st night, propagation for EU seemed good. Hello TF4M, thanks for calling us, we were looking for you for two years since we missed your calling in 2007. F5IN, your signal was stable and could be heard for a long time. GW3YDX, were you waiting for our return for a long time? Thank you for your patience. After sunrise, we went around the fields to refine our bevarage antenna for US. CE/K7CA, you were the longest distance station as usual. At 1135z, W2GD called us. And then, many FNxx and FMxx stations called us for 30 minutes. After that, We could contact to US stations along with their sunrise. Ionospheric layer didn't help to work KV4FZ and P49V. Now we apologize to all stations that we could not copy. Noise level was quite low during the TEST. But keyclicks from local (JA side) stations blocked weak siganls from overseas. We used FT1000(with keyclicks mod) for TX. If we have heavy clicks, please tell us. CU in the next TBDC. :-) - JA3YBK

TRX: Yaesu FT-2000(100W) ANT: Fishing pole GP(75% shortened radiator and 50% shortened radial x2) This is my first participation in the international top band contest. I have been paticipated on this contest since the first time. I paticipated on LowPower SingleOp. The condition was better than the last year. I used tranceiver 'K2 & K3 & FT1000D' on this contest. I use a K2 for wtach a very weak singal. I use a k3 for a weak signal in the very heavy QRM. I use a FT1000D for a spped watch. I use my Micro Vert Antenna which length only 3.6meters. I built it on my balcony 2m*10m space of my condminiam. I set the transmiting spedd of my electronics keyer upper 20 wpm. I like my  Micro Veret Antenna for my top band equipment! - JE1SPY

*That* was a blast.  I also made more QSOs than anyone (who was scored by BARC) last year.  Of course, everyone else will make more Qs, too. Going into the contest, I thought this year was going to be difficult. First, the day before the contest, I still had an annoying head cold. Second, on the day of the contest, I discovered the deer had mangled some of the coax going to the phased array, which was causing crashes and pops from water getting inside the coax.  Third, the nasty northwest noise made an appearance for a while the morning of the test. But things got better:, the cold mostly faded by the beginning of the contest, all the water in the coax was conveniently converted to copper oxide before the contest started and I had no popping and crashing noise, and the nasty buzzing noise stayed away from the first half of the contest. Usually there is a flurry of European activity around 2200Z, but this year the first Europeans were very weak and few in number.  They never did get very strong although I might guess that signals were somewhat close to normal by European sunrise.  On the other hand, I could hear the US west coast! Rates stayed very good until around 0700Z and fell dramatically.  At 0830Z I took a 2 hour nap.  When I came back, the nasty northwest noise had returned.  The nasty noise raises the noise floor by about 6 db to the northwest, which means bearings from about 280 to 350 degrees are almost useless.  Nevertheless, I worked two new countries, FO8 and JD1 and also ZL and 4 JAs.  Actually 3 of the JAs were beaming due west on the phased array and the last one and the JD1 was on the due north Beverage.  Skew path?  Or just the bearing with the best signal to noise ratio?  I couldn't tell. I tried to add additional automation for this contest.  The goal was to have the phased array and software radio system (still looking for a good name for the combined system) "find the caller" by tuning around and looking in all directions simultaneously.  Of course, everything takes longer than one expects, and I only had the "tuning around" part working by the contest.  I didn't use the feature very much, probably because I'm not yet confident about its performance or my competence to deal with it.  But I should have it thoroughly confusing for when K0DXC gets here for the CQ 160. A lot more DX worked than last year: 4O, 9A, C6, CE, DL, E7, EI, ES, F, FM, FO/P, G, GM, GU, GW, HA, I, JA, JD1, K, KH6, KL7, KP4, KV4, LA, LY, OE, OH, OK, OM, ON, OZ, P4, PA, S5, SM, SP, TF, UA, UR, VE, YL, YU, ZC4, and ZL. Equipment: Icom IC-765, ETO 91B (K8ND loaner), 8 element phased array and SDR receiver, 13 Beverages, 65 foot "T" vertical and 75 radials, 2 computers, 2 keyboards, and 3 screens. - K1LT

Conditions to Europe seemed quite good.  Band was very quiet. My effort was cut short when some kind of electronic pollution covered the entire band in S9 birdies. Not sure how to describe the sound, but it sounds like very rippled tones every kHz or so.  The noise extends from 1700 to 2200 kHz. It does go away at times, but seems to be worse now that we are into the cold weather.  Have to find the source or it will be impossible to work DX on 160 from here. - K5ZD

Conditions were superb.  Once again I operated from the home QTH of K7CA - using Alan's amazing 8 element circle array with my FT-1000D, computer, etc. Conditions to Europe were good. JA conditions were mediocre.  Big surprise was opening to VK6 with VK6VZ and VK6DXI in log (31 points each) during the last minutes of the contest. Please consider me for two plaques: (1) GMCC Low Power W,VE,XE West of 100 degrees longtitude (QTH at apx. 113 W longtitude) and (2) W7KF Oldest op to make > 50 Q's (birthday is 4/23/43. Age = 66+ years). That,of course,is in addition to the usual (obvious) plaques. - K7NJ  Band was in decent condition here in Colorado. Fighting  a rotten cold and lost prime time hours of operating.  Many US stations calling CQ on top of EU dx. Managed 17 EU, 30 JA, 2 UA0, 1 JD and a few others. Check me for the Old Timers award (66yrs) and the golden log. (HO HO HO) - K8FC

very slow here, and I could hear just about as good as a block of wood. 1st 10 q's were made with 100w, then turned amp on with output to appx 400w. Lots of noise since last week's ice storm. Hearing cut numbers in grid numbers was different. Still, a good time with the short amount of time available. - KM9M

Dropped in for half an hour of search and pounce with 5 Watts to an HF6V

VERY HIGH NOISE MOST OF THE CONTEST.  EVEN USING ATTENUATOR, WAS S5 ON THE K3. WOKE UP (LOCAL) SUNDAY MORNING AND NOISE WAS S1 (AHHHH), BUT FEW TAKERS. PUT UP A NEW INVERTED L, BUT MY VERY LOW DIPOLE WAS ALWAYS BETTER, EVEN FOR DX. I HEARD TONS OF EUROPE...BUT WITH QRP, ONLY WORKED THREE (A NEW RECORD FOR ME). - KR2Q

First Time Entry to Stew Perry Contest was Fun!!! - KU8T

Quite a tasty Stew this year!  Highlights were having some success calling CQ with my 5W signal, hearing an OH2 early Saturday evening, then setting the alarm for 2:30 am and getting up to work bunches of east coast guys relatively effortlessly, and finally bagging JA8ISU's S9+10 signal.    Snaps to those sharp-eared ops that pulled me through! - KX7L

The power went out at 0130 GMT, and the emergency generator only permitted exciter power from 0231-0600.  Anyone who worked me during that period deserves double points. This was a 100% S&P entry, but if I qualify for "Golden Log" I would prefer that to any other award. "Longest DX Contact" was ZL3IX in gridsquare RE66.  The plaque sponsored by Hudson Valley Towers is my THIRD choice. - N2KW-1

I decided to try low power. That limited my range to a few SE US stations for farthest distance. Nice to hear the activity on top band. My score is probably incorrect because I set the category before the contest to HP, but actually used LP. - N6AN

Ran as M/S so I could test the new version of CW Skimmer that works directly with the Perseus SDR and was very happy with the result Had bad plasma TV noise, but I plan to get an MFJ 1026 receive antenna phasing system to fix that. Otherwise, had a fun contest with a lot of familiar calls.  Best DX was CE1/K7CA, a 19 pointer! - N6IE

*NOTE* All transmitted signals were from a remote station (owned by K6IXA) -  I don't have a transmit antenna at home. I did have CW Skimmer running at home, listening with a receive loop (hence multi-op category). Does this qualify for the "Remotely Controlled Station" category? I didn't even realise that existed until just now ... I'd have put a whole lot more effort in if I had known... - N6ML

Enjoyed the contest. - N7FF

Band was noisy compared to recent evenings.  Lots of DX available to those with the correct tools. QRP wasn't in that tool set! Good test for the receiving antennas here though. - N7IR

Used single element wire for Tx/Rx and first time entry. I was able to work the big guns in EU, but signals were down from what they would be on a good night. IN addition condx to the Rocky Mountain area and west coast were down from normal. Having the contest right after Xmas did really seem to hurt activity; I ran out of stations to run pretty quickly which encouraged me to S&P and work high point value Q's. Best DX was CE1/K7CA and was very happy to work OM Hisa JA8ISU with LP. - N8II

Enjoyed SP 160 meter contest.  Looking forward to more 160 meter contesting. - N8JK

Snuck in 3 hours of play time. Oldest son Mike, KC9ETU was home on a short 96 hour leave from Navy for Christmas before being deployed to AFGAN, so wanted to spend as much time as possible with him. Operated low power and a single wire "lazy sloping" inverted L vertical to 35' CU next year! 73 Gene, N9TF - N9TF

Condx were not as good as during the ARRL 160 contest earlier this month, when I could work pretty much anyone with an S9 signal with 5 watts.  Still, there are some mighty good ears out there - many thanks for the fills.  No DX but glad to work a couple of guys on the West Coast. - N9UC

Despite poor conditions there was some good DX to be found. I called CE1/K7CA for more than an hour without  getting through. Left the radio on his frequency for the night and when I got up around 0600 he was still there and I worked  him in less than 3 minutes.  Thanks for a new one and Zone 12 for my WAZ! Several JA stations were logged for the first time in the SPDC from TF along with VK6DXI and KH6LC. I have absolutely NO illusions / self-delusions about my ever winning a contest like this! I just enjoy getting on the air (my favorite band, too, by the way!) and making QSOs---hopefully giving a new much- needed multiplier to the deserving in the process! Hi - VE3CUI

First time entry. Lots of fun, but the QRM was unreal. Conditions to EU were great on Saturday night. Rig was old TS-140S with 500Hz filter into 80m Zepp at 50ft apex used as top-loaded vertical. - VE3FRX

For the second successive year we had an ice storm for the Stew Perry. Is this specially arranged by the Boring Club ? A thick coating of ice on our inverted L necessitated power reduction and operating below 1810 for a long period. We did manage some useful East European QSOs, but conditions generally were variable and poor to the south. Our best DX was UU4JMG. Regrettably we missed CE1 and KH6. Surprisingly, we heard no Gs. Thanks to the organizers for an enjoyable contest. - VE3OSZ

I had a lot of fun the hour or 2 that I put into this contest. Using my oldie FT-757GX and '54 Blue Racer Bug I went into this contest casually. I tuned my loop skywire with my MFJ Intellituner in the semi Auto mode setting Capacitance and Inductance manually. - VE7BGP

Good fun again this year. Conditions and propagation were not great here, only good. It sure was a real dx challenge. 73's and hope to qso agin in the next Stew Perry DX contest. - VK3IO

For me condition were much better then last year. I had fun and a great time. Worked many USA stations (what I could not do last year). I had 2 x 37 pointers. W4ZV (18,296.6km) and N2CU( 18,149.9 km). Also 15 QSO with 30 or more points.I even got answers to my CQ's. :-) Operated around 8.5 h as VK6 has only 10h of darkness during this contest... Worked two new ones: TF4M and JD1BMH Band sounded like a beautiful music, with so many signals heard during the contest. Thanks to all for many great QSO's. PS. Few days after the contest we had a large bushfire in area where my shack is located. 40 houses were lost. Thanks to a great action by fire fighters, fire was put out before it got to my place. Lucky this time. - VK6DXI

Great fun as usual but would have been nice if there were more QRO USA stations. Conditions were good into Europe in the run up to my sunrise but poor into the USA at the following sunset.  Had a nice little opening into northern Europe a few minutes before contest end. - VK6VZ

Wkd several EU stations who would be strong enough to work and then would disappear into the QSB. Also wkd a few Carribean, JA, KH6, AL9 and VK6DXI. -  What happened to the DX window?  AL9A was covered up constantly by a K6 on the east coast who was CQing on 1833. As always this is an enjoyable international Topband event. I was unable to operate during some prime activity hours this year due to family visiting for the Holidays so I decided to just have some fun and S&P as time permitted for the long-distance QSOs, particularly EU.  Due to less band-crowding and the nice points-incentive to work the distant stations for this particular event (thanks much Boring ARC for your great work!) it is certainly easier to hear AND attract the attention of DX...esp. for us LP guys. I was happy to put 22 EU plus 3 additional Caribbean DX stns in the log during limiting operating as I tried to bolster my score via the "long-distance" Q vice the rate-meter...it's a Topband Distance Contest right??!!  Kudos to UT8IM for my "most patient QSO" as we struggled mightily with QRM and QSB but finally completed the QSO...as well as being my most distant contact at 7918km.  Also, to UW2M with a strong signal who was second in distance @ 7823km at my QTH. Many thanks to ALL the great ears for hearing and working this LP station. And...always cool to work W1BB and hear the spirit of "Mr. 160 Meters" during this event! I look forward to working many of you in the upcoming CQWW 160 and throughout 2010...Happy New Year to all. < 36' sloping vert with 18 mostly 1/8 and a few 1/4 wv ground radials on 100' x 200' suburban lot, occasional use of very short NE/SW unterminated B.O.G. 100 percent search and pounce. Transceiver: Elecraft K2/100 Antenna: Hustler 6btv trap vertical about 26 feet high with an 18 foot long downward drooping top loading wire. 22 radials about 22 feet long. It is used for both receive and transmit. I am not sure if this counts as a single wire. However, since I neglected to mention that I used this same antenna in 2007 and therefore didn't claim the antenna under 10 meter plaque (not that my performance deserved a plaque), I thought I would at least mention my antenna here. - W9CF

We stayed in Utah this Christmas which allowed me to participate in this year's Stew Perry. Located in an antenna restricted neighborhood I normally would have operated from my work site on top a remote mesa near Zion National Park.  But members of my family were suffering from the flu bug so I needed to stay at home and care for them.  So I had to be a bit creative when building a usable 160 meter antenna. Luckily our house backs up to open desert so I waited until sunset and constructed an inverted-L wire using #26 gauge wire supported by a 23 ft. fiberglass mast secured on our back fence.  It loaded up perfectly on 160 thanks to an antenna tuner. Band conditions were nice and quiet which made my 6.5 hours of operating time enjoyable.  Station was an Elecraft K-3 running 100 watts and WriteLog contesting software. Hope to see everyone again next year! 73's de Jack - WA7LNW

This was my first time in the Stew Perry contest, as I am often away on holiday over the Christmas period. I enjoyed the event, despite only ending up making 24 QSOs. I like the distance scoring format in this contest as it helps to level the playing field, especially for more distant parts of the globe like ZL! I used an FT1000MP plus AL80A amp, and a half wave inverted vee dipole with the centre at 13 meters above ground. The ends of the dipole were bent to fit within the perimeter of our 1000 square meter property. The QTH is about 100 meters ASL on a steep hillside, with a good takeoff in the downhill direction towards America, but poor in the uphill direction towards the short path to Europe. The QTH is located in Wellington city and suffers from a high level of manmade noise that is radiated from a nearby commercial area. The noise level ranged between S4 and S9 (using 250 Hz filters) throughout the contest and forced me to QRX on many occasions. I apologise to those who I was struggling to copy at times. I need to do further work on receiving antenna options, as well as seeking to clean up the sources of the noise. There was good propagation towards Europe before our sunrise on Sunday morning, although the local noise meant that I could only hear the louder signals. I was pleased to make my longest distance QSO with RX3APM who had a tremendous 579 signal. I also noted good signals from UA4JMG and E77DX but they were not hearing me. Conditions seemed to be average on the Sunday evening. I did not hear any Europe stations at sunset. There were some very loud USA stations but I could only work a few of them. K5NA was the loudest, peaking up to S9 at times, but after repeated calling I could not even raise a QRZ. The only Canadian station heard and worked was VE6WQ. Later in the evening there were some good signals from Asia, and at one point I even managed to generate a small pileup of JA stations. My 'best ears' award goes to Herb KV4FZ and James K9YC, who both heard me after a single call. - ZL1AZE
