Boring Amateur Radio Club – K7RAT

The eleventh Stew Perry TBDC once again showed a quantum leap in activity.  We received a total of 575 logs, almost 100 more than last year’s record breaking total.  This puts the activity level of this contest on par with the ones run by the big magazines.  The Boring Amateur Radio Club feels that you all have a part of this success, as you have spread the good word about this contest to your friends and neighbors.

Conditions were good – with most parts of the world able to work most of the other parts of the world.  However, we still have not seen some of the excellent conditions that we had during the last sunspot minimum back in 1996/1997.  It does appear that the new season is starting off with a bang however, with several USA west coast stations working Europe in August!!

After the contest, there was lots of discussion about the possibility of moving the date of the contest to something closer to the equinox.  The Boring Directors have decided to sponsor a pre-Stew event on the weekend of October 20/21st as a way to both encourage activity earlier in the “season” and also as a way to see how the contest would play out at an earlier date.  During the past few years, the openings have been fantastic during this time period.  The normal Stew will run on the last weekend of the year.

The rules for the October running are the same as the regular event, except that we are not running the plaque program, or accepting paper logs.  A simple write-up with the scores and soapboxes will be posted before the “real” Stew in December.

We are sad to report the passing of Earl Cunningham, K6SE.  Earl was also very active on 160 with his previous callsign W5RTQ.  Earl had been very active on 160 meters for at least 40 years that I know of.  He was one of the first stations to use a directive phased array on the west coast.  Earl also made significant contributions to the software used to calculate distances between grids.  He did not rest until I was using the best possible method.  Earl was also the coordinator of the Topband dinner at the Visalia DX Convention, which sadly he missed this year as he became ill just before the event.  We will miss your signal on the band Earl.

One of the most talked about aspects of this contest is the plaque program, administered by Lew Sayre, W7EW and enabled by the generosity of the plaque sponsors themselves.  The amazing amount of creativity in coming up with some of the categories is only matched by the fierce competition amongst the participants trying to get a piece of hardwood for their shack wall.  We do try to spread them around by not giving any single person more than one plaque.  If you find that you *really* just have to have one, you should take a tip from KK9K, and sponsor one that you have a good chance of winning.

And now for the scores.  Each line item indicates the category (S or M for single/multi-op), Power (H, L or Q), the grid operated from.  The RAW QSO total is the number of QSOs found in the log.  Dupes and busts are removed for the QSO total.  The total QSO points is in the PTS column and the number of grids worked in GRD.  The best DX callsign and distance is shown.  Finally, the number of QRP and Low power stations worked is shown.  The QRP stations you work get a X4 multiplier and the low power stations get a X2 multiplier.  QRP and low power stations are determined by the logs we received - so you won't get this bonus just by putting /QRP in a callsign.

QRP Portable at Sierra Sky Ranch outside of Oakhurst, CA.FT-817ND, ZM-2 antenna tuner, 166 foot long wire antenna. But wait, you say, the ZM-2 doesn't "do" 160m. I experimentally determined that... Thanks to the two stations that dug my QRPp signal out of the muck. Things will be much better next year... 73 de Donald - AE6RF

Had fun, but wish condx. were better.  Due to maladjustment in my FT-897D, I had to submit this as Low power, instead of QRP. - AF9J

My first-ever attempt at the Stew Perry Contest --- what an incredible turn-out! It WAS a challenge to decipher all those grid squares! First attempt too at electronic log submission (please forgive my gaffs!).  I'm sure OM W1BB is looking down upon us all & smiling! - CG3XZ

TS-850 @ 5 Watt, 160-80-40-Inv-V @ 15m - DF1DX

Again I could participate with FT817, QRP <5 Watt out into antenna tuner Z11 into inductivity into feeder to my Windom antenna FD3, which is about 8m high. But the shorter end of the 21m long Windom is about 1m above metal parts and areas of the roof of my house. Due to strong wind the antenna was moving and the SWR was often jumping between <1,5 and >3, seen at the Z11 and FT817.  Sometimes I had to transmit in the 2,5 Watt position of the FT817. I thank all the QSO partners for their patience listening to my weak signals. Again It was great pleasure to participate in the Stew Perry Topband Challenge. - DJ3GE

Great experience to take part with QRP after a long time. - DJ3RA

Very nice contest indeed. This was the first time in almost 50 years of ham radio that I took part in the Stew Perry Contest and I regret for not having participated any earlier. For logging, I used WinTest and it has been a thrill to see the squares being marked in red and black in the course of the contest.  I am not at all well equipped for any serious 160m work. No RX-ant and just a 65.6m long dipole bent several times in all plains featuring a maximum height of just 11m.  Therefore I was all the more thrilled by succeeding to make a QSO with N0FW/KP2, more than 7500 km away. He had an outstanding signal at times. Basically it did not work too well for me to the West. The only other DX towards the West was W3GH (or was it W3GS??) whom I could hardly hear. K9DX was much stronger but he did not hear me. Regretfully I neither reached P40W, who was quite weak.  Thanks a lot for a really nice contest. Hopefully next year I'll at least have a K9AY for RX-work.... - DJ3WE

First of all, I had lots of fun in taking part in SP 2006. On the other hand, I wish to keep SP a demonstration of "Gentleman band" in the sense of W1 - DL1AMQ

Happy new year - DL5AXX

It was my first Stew! This year only a few moments in a great and fair contest! Next year? We'll see us! - DL7ZZ

Really a delightful contest. Sorry spent only a few hours. Listened to about a dozen Japanese - 10 000km , as they were answering EU's no way getting hold of them. I found propagation poor to NA, only about 20 stns heard. Thanks everybody pulling through my QRP signal. This is the most challenging shortwave contest, the thrill is in correctly copying the grids - after the contest, I looked into the cluster and found many spots - guys all the fun is gone when the info is read from the screen. 73 and I will try next year. - DL9YX

Too windy for 'proper' antenna. Just S&P to work who could hear me with 100w. - G0MTN

Just a small time in the contest. Plenty of activity though hard to work that much on QRP. Nothing much in the way of DX heard. 73 Dave - G3YMC

Tried using a balloon supported vertical this year. Worked like a dream. Condx were awful though! - GM4AFF

Operating time was 12 hrs. Equipment: IC756-Pro III, ACOM 2000A, Antennas: Delta Loop and 3 Beverages - HA5JI

MY FIRST STEVE PERRY CONTEST BUT I HAVEN’T A GOOD ANT FOR THIS YEAR I HPE NEXT YEAR IN GUD CONDX. BEST 73 DE GIUSEPPE IT9RZU CIAO FROM SICILY ISLAND - IT9RZU

I have been participated in this contest since the first time. I participated in LowPower SingleOp. The condition was not so good in this year, but better than a last year.  This season, in east Asia area, we had a very heavy jamming (OTH radar?) from BY (south west area?) on 160m band. But it stopped until middle of December. I used M.V. (micro vert) antenna by DK7PE which built on my condominium’s balcony. It was only 3.6m length!  My topics of this contest, I do compared with two YAESU's transceivers FT2000 and FT1000D. I am very interested in these receiving performances! - JE1SPY

Great Contest.  Rest 2230-0807 1200-2400 - JH4UYB

100 Watts - K0IO

N6TR was very weak here. Guess he was running QRP. - K1DG

Activity seemed a bit down, especially from Europe. Maybe conditions weren't that great. Equipment was Icom 765ProIII to a stealth inverted L I live in a condo and the antenna runs up a pine tree in the back and over to another tree. - K1EP

ALL S&P QSOS. - K2XX

Back on top band after being off over a year. Spent the day working on extended inverted L and added 8 radials. Rig: iC765 (100W). RX ant: 20m quad! 100% S & P.... - K3JT

First time for this contest.  Enjoyed the format and had fun for the few hours on.  CU next year. - K3OQ

Operated from QTH of Tom, W8JI. - K4BAI

Interesting contest and lots of fun. - K4JLD

Sure is a lot harder running low power. However, there were few stations that I could just not work but I concluded they were listening on directional antennas. The conclusion I draw from this is that I must increase my receive sensitivity before raising my power much past 100W. There were three cases where no matter how hard I tried

KV4FZ, PJ2/WB9Z and P40W never heard enough of me to complete a contact. That was frustrating because with my amp on I can usually get them on just a few calls. It's amazing what that extra 12dB can do! - K4XU

QRN was awful! - K5SM

I am running 100 watts to a 40 Meter Delta Loop that is radially mounted on the back wall of my mobile home. I live in a mobile home park that does not allow antennas. - K6CSL

Working Europe is a rare experience for me here in Southern California, and I was very pleased to work 4 in this contest.  DX worked were CE, GI, GM, HL, JA, KH6, KL7, KP2, OZ, P4, PJ2, SP, XE and ZL.  Many thanks. - K6NR

Good contest, I started out with 2 hours with good runs, then it felt like I had worked everyone who was on.  I worked very few east of the Rockies, north of BC, south of San Diego and west of KH6.  I did have a KH6 call me, which was good. I felt like I was pretty loud, I had no problem holding my run frequencies. Late Sat night it almost felt like some of us were working dupes to make sure everything was still working or getting too tired!   I got up at 0500 Sunday morning to try bolster my Q's, that didn't really help much, just a bunch of very loud stations that I had already worked.  I had about 10 less Q's than last year, also last year lots of east coasters.  Wonder if I will be in the running for most Q's in the 5800'+ category? Lineup: FT-1000MP, AL-80b @ 900w, 125' Sloper off tower in a southerly direction, W/L with ancient DELL PC - K6NV

As usual, enjoyed the contest, but age inhibits staying up all night. Condx were definitely below normal. - K6SE

FT1000MP, ALPHA-91B, INV VEE, TR6.78 - K6TA

Some quick short fun. - K6VVA

S&P again this year. I Would have done better had my 10 minute snooze at 1030Z hadn't lasted until 1505Z (when the sun streamed through the window and woke me up) - K7FL

Operated from K7CA QTH using Al's exceptional antennas & my radio. - K7NJ

This was the first time out for me in this contest. I just made a few contacts to get the feel of it; it's a fun contest. - K8AJS

Took more QSO's to get about the same points as last year. - K8IR

QRO Operation along with W3USA QRP effort - K8MR

Thanks for the many contacts, and for all of those that called and I was not able to pull them through. - K9DX

First time Stew Perry entry low power, great contest - K9FD

Search and pounce only log. 197 QSO's.  great contest! No Europe. Later found two big trees came down and wiped out the NE beverage. - K9FO

Conditions were fair.  Western USA stations were sparse. Heard very few DX stations -- no EU. Surprised to have W1BB reply to a CQ. - K9MMS

First submission to the "Stew."  Great fun in spite of the QRN. 73...Don - K9NR

Since there isn't a "Best Whine" plaques sponsored this year, I will spare you the gory details about why I ended up with significantly fewer QSO's this year than last year.  While conditions were not as good as last year, I did find that the setup I was using, which would fit into a space not larger than 20m X 10m worked quite well.  I started out as 100% S & P, but my laziness got the best of me.  I did, however, drive everyone nuts running the entire contest at 17.9999999999999999999 wpm... You could definitely tell that some of the guys had too much coffee right before the contest!  TRY DECAF GUYS!  I also chose to run 25 watts instead of 100 watts, Talk about being a rebel!  Not really QRP unless you consider that my antenna was only 18 feet tall. (I was portable in the park behind my house!)  WOW!  I told you I was going to spare you the gory details and I didn’t.. sorry. While I am at it, I will go ahead and tell you that the reason I ended up with a paltry QSO total is that I decided around 0400z that I was going to take a nap and get in up an hour for the new blood on the band.... Didn’t happen.  I didn’t wake up again until sometime after 15:00z.. I guess I should take the lead of some of those other guys and drink more coffee.. Oh well.. the Stew was a blast.. don’t change it and don’t forget to invite me next year for a bowl of stew....73 John.. PS: Did I mention the noise from the storms to the west that we had on Friday night?  unreal! - KB5NJD

Operated at 4,400' MSL elevation, with self-built Elecraft K2/100 and one very busy 3" muffin fan. Lots and lots of QRN, but conditions were quite good at times. Gave this one a maximum effort. Thanks to W7IZL for letting me use his array and play with his kids. - KB7Q

And if elected, I'll cut taxes, increase pork and lower the deficit! Oops, wrong soapbox.  Sorry. - KB8U

Conditions looked good leading up to the test. Low noise and geomagnetic, so decided to try low power. Worked about everything I heard, but did not hear Europe well enough from the Black Hole - KJ9C

Good band conditions. A fun way to end the year. - KN4Y

Homebrew Kit (Elecraft K2) QRP. Static Crashes and all here in EL98 Signals From out west were not that good but readable Lots of fun. David - KR4OW

Great fun! - KT0R

Did not expect propagation and weather like in December. Two days of rain and noisy band with very deep QSB-worst I can remember in years! Thanks everyone and Happy 2007! - KU1CW

How about a new category called "High High Power (more than 1500 watts

out)" so I don't have to compete with the people running QROO? - KU2M

Good fun! Bob asked me if I wanted some 'serious air time' since I've been back from college and I just couldn't resist. As always Man, this was hard work. Static crashes started as the sun went down and never went away.  Even through all the noise the majority of the signals were quite loud.  Basically only CQ'd the whole contest but did look around a couple of times when things got slow. Only a few DX worked. This was my first one but certainly not my last. Hey, there's only two more years. I'm eligible for that plaque. C'mon you young folks. The only complaint I had during the entire test was people not sending "QRL?" before CQing. Come on guys...lets use some sense. Also, CQing 20 KHz away doesn't solve the problem most of the time either. Age 19 - KU5B

YAESU FT-990 100w ant.DIPOLE - LY1C

As always - nice contest! - LY2OO

This was only S&P operation - LZ9R

With only a G5RV not a bad result! - M3CVN

Low Power  99 Watts - N0AT

Interesting test from the Caribbean side.  I was hearing stations that I hardly ever hear from OH.  Lots of EU and even some AS.  It was tough through the local noise though.  I was happy to give out a lot of 'tnx new one.'  CU next year. - N0FW/KP2

100% S&P - N0TT

Very enjoyable contest, as always. - N0XM

First time participant...100% Search and Pounce...Really enjoyed contest even if condx were not great.  Bill N1QME - N1QME

This was our 1st effort in Stew Perry as M/M QRP from the fabulous location in SNJ at the former home of WSC. We gratefully thank N2HM & WYRS-FM for allowing us to continue our 160 meter operations from the salt marsh in West Creek, NJ.  While the core members of the W2GD 160 Contest team toiled away at putting the station together for the Stew, our "leader" W2GD was basking the sun in P4 land. This time the unusually mild WX we are having in NJ made the job easy to accomplish. We also would like to thank the members of the SJDXA for allowing us to use the call N2CW for this contest.  Overall band condx were just ok, but after the 05z hour, with the front coming in, it went into the toilet. Many thanks to the stations that stuck with us until they heard our call and got us in their log.  Furthest DX logged was LY2IJ. Other DX logged included: SN2B, CU2JU, DL6RAI, F5IN, F6IRA, GM3POI, GI0KOW (loud), G0IVZ, KV4FZ (always LOUD), P40W, PJ2/WB9Z, N0FW/KP2.  Not many West Coast and zero Pacific made it into the log, just couldn't hear us very well. Station Equip: Icom IC756 ProIII, IC756 ProII, IC746. Tx antennas: NE, SW vertical dipoles @ 180ft & Inverted L @ 60ft. Rx antennas: Multiple Bevs to E, NE, S, SW, NW & N. - N2CW

All S&P and enjoyed what time I could get on. 73, Wayne - N2WK

First time in Stew Perry contest, but it will not be my last; I enjoyed it. It was fun and interesting to do a contest without mults, but with some QSOs worth a lot more than others.   Another positive feature was that conditions were fairly good: worked several EU and US west-coast stations, which are not heard every night on 160, and one KH6, even rarer.  The final positive thing was that the activity level was fairly high: I didn't know what to expect, so was pleased to get rates of 60 to 80 QSOs/hr, at least for short periods. ==> An important note: I realized too late that my last QSO, at around 1455Z Sun., came after 5 off-times instead of the maximum of 4.  So, I disclaim the point for that last QSO, with NS3T, but please accept it as a check so that NS3T does not lose credit. - N3UM

I show K3STX as a dupe. However, He sent two different grids (FN31 and FM19). I will let you sort it out...73 - N4IR

Enjoyed the brief 55 QSOs! Sorry I can't calculate a score! - N4NTO

CONDX BAD DUE TO LOTS OF STORMS IN SOUTHEAST. STILL LOTS OF FUN ANYTIME ON 160M - N4PN

QTH - Eureka, CA - N6AA

Really enjoyed the contest. The pace was slower than I prefer. Worked everyone I heard. Did not hear very many though. CE1/K7CA probably my best DX in the contest, and a new country for me. Still hoping to work EU. - N6KB

N7ON Station Description: Reno, Nevada @4,500 ESL Antenna:  WD8DSB-sloper (68' loaded wire sloping toward ground from 28' high feedpoint atop a Jackite pole) Antenna is < 10m tall Self-constructed radio, Elecraft K2/100 S/N 5023, built in 2005 Power output = 100w - N7ON

Good activity - only had a few hours to play.  Best DX was KH6AT who called in and several EU stns. - N8BJQ

Another fine contest, just wish the operator was in better shape. - N8VW

Station conditions: TS-2000 100 watts Antenna: Alpha Delta DX-B shortened 1/4 sloper at 35' apex sloping to 4' above gnd. Lots of fun even with antenna challenged station. I was hoping for 100 grids and Alaska for last state needed for WAS-160. Conditions were a little soft to the west coast until I got back on at 11:30UTC. I struggled to hear west coasters Saturday night, but all were loud when I returned at 1130UTC. Too bad no AK heard. I did improve on my score from last year by 26 raw Q's, all S&P. CU all next year, 73's Gene - N9TF

ASL 4600 feet - NT6K

Unfortunately DX-signals went 20-30 dB down from the previous day's level - OH1PS

JA opening OK (made my 1st JA after 36 yrs on TOPBAND) W/VE opening vy poor noisy! I was lucky to remember W1BB Stew my friend for years! I am satisfied with SD logging SW, simple and great one! - OK1MCW

Only 9h 40min in the contest with actually no northern path propagation at all forced me overslept local sunrise. - S50U

FEW HOURS JUST FOR FUN! - S57DX

Many East coast USA stations transmit on verticals and receive on west          beverages so we from Europe are wasting a lot of time useless calling - S59A

Good fun, heard more than I could work, especially from NA. Mid winter condition are interesting. Was using the cluster to spot stations during the contest. - SM2CEW

All contacts were S&P. Operating time: 1500-2040, 0000-0100, 0325-0600, 1330-1459 Rig: FT1000MPField, Inverted V - UA4FER

This was a father & son effort. We managed to get a reasonable number of QSOs but our points total was not as high as we had hoped for. Signals were generally relatively weak here and there was much deep QSB. We only had 6 EU QSOs and did not hear KH6. However, the contest was enjoyable as usual. Thanks to the Boring people for running this event. - VE3OSZ

Another tough one, specially that the contest finished exactly at midnight 31 Dec local time. What a way to celebrate a New Year - VK6DXI

Tough going and only 30 QSOs to show for 8 hours slog. After nine years, I think conditions at the end of December stink.  Please can we try a contest near one of the equinoxes?  That would be great!!!! - VK6VZ

Power line noise was fierce!  Couldn't run noise blanker because K0PY lives 1/4 mile from me and he was in contest too. - W0EB

My first Stew Perry, but not my last! C U Next year- 73 and Tnx - W2DPT

OPERATED ENTIRE TEST AT 18 WPM - W3CP

What a pity there was so little EU and so much QRN.  I was more hopeful, given the cycle and recent condx.  Used 150w as practice for ARRL DX.  Cost me the double points, but important to try it out.  Really enjoyed seeing everyone on top band from the home Q Maury W3EF (usually / HB9). - W3EF

QRP operation along with the QRO operation as K8MR - W3USA

Operated from QTH of Tom, W8JI. - W4AN

First time I have really tried this contest.  Did S&P only as was not comfortable with CQing yet. Europe started out okay, but soon found many CQing EU stations were not hearing me.  I never had propagation to Asia or Oceania, but could hear West Coast stations working that area with no problem.  Even the west coast stations were weak here, with a few not hearing me. All around I enjoyed the test and I will be back next year. 73, Sam - W4PK

Storm clouds stayed overhead most of the contest.  The atmospherics were challenging, and difficult to copy thru, but it was good to work everybody.  This contest is the most fun of any and it's always been a pleasure to operate in....even with a little QRN.  See you next year.  Joe - W4SAA

My first SP was great fun!  Making some high point QSOs was the highlight of my 3.5 hour operation.  I look forward to next year. - W6CIT

This year I was going to give the SP a real effort but everything that could get in the way did. Next year. - W6XI

Gee, That was fun! - W7AT

Here is my entry striving for the homebrew plaque. I wanted to do a completely home brew station but had problems with my 9 tube receiver, so opted to go with the main station one, an NC183 with a BC453 Q5er, and a 6SN7/6K6 audio filter. The transmitter used a 4-5.3 MHz ARC5 tuned down to 160 meters, a keyed exciter comprising a 6AG7/6L6, and a single 211 final amp, using a 5U4 bridge rectifier power supply.  The antenna is either a dipole or a lazy U. For receiving I use a K9AY loop or a 350 foot Beverage. Output power is measured using an EICO 725 power meter, in which I adjust the antenna tuner to output about 80-90 watts to the antenna.  Conditions were tough, good for local contacts but really hard for distance ones. This is the best 160 contest! - W7DRA

Never went over 18 wpm with this call - W7EW

I sent all exchanges at a speed of 17 wpm. - W8AEF

First SP for me. That makes this a personal best hihi. - W8XY

First time in the Stew.  Just now getting on topband after 30+ years in ham radio.  Added a base loading coil to my 80m inverted L for the ARRL 160 and have been having a lot of fun ever since. Was all S&P.  Thanks to everyone who managed to pull me out of the noise. - W9TN

This is the first time I've operated in the Stew Perry contest. It was fun to see the distance points for stations worked. I heard P40W and the GM3 station.  One additional note - the stuttering CW problem I had with Writelog has been isolated to running the program in XP. - WA2MNO

Ran TT Argonaut V QRP with capacitance hat vertical. Lotta fun. Wish I had more time to spend on it. - WB0CFF

All S & P - WI9WI

Enjoyable, until an ice and snow storm knocked out by antenna! - WN0L

It was very noisy in the North end of Seattle last night! - WN7T

Used a new RX loop.  Very happy with it for noise reduction but needed a preamp; no DX

heard.  Nice signals from the West Coast, though - WO9S

100% S & P - WS6X

Located at 7522 feet in altitude. Lots of QSB but able to pull a lot of stations out. See you all next year. - WT9Q

First contest.   First weekend ever on 160M with wire in trees about 35' up on a city lot. Greg WU7O - WU7O

Conditions were better to many places this year, Europe was not one of them. Strongest and most consistent USA station was N7UA.  Biggest surprise was N6TR, 45 minutes after local sunset in the last hours of the contest.  It was good to meet old friends on Topband again.  100 watts went a lot further portable from the inlaw’s farm this year with the 30 meter shunt fed tower rather than the inverted L last year on Batam.  All new beverages made hearing a lot easier, but this is still the “Black Hole” of Asia.  Another great contest and a highlight of the holiday season yet again! - YB5AQB

TRCVR ICOM 751A ANT- Delta 159m - YL2PP

Tnx for nice contest! 73 and God bless you. - YL2PQ

Tnx for contest - YO3BBW

Conditions were very poor toward EU (DL, G & UA wkd), unfortunately  there is a source of QRM from the North, in between NA path & my station so the Flag was not able to do much more for me  :-( I had the chance to work N0TT in MO so only 1 state ahead for TB WAS. Anyway, a lot of fun and the chance to QSO with good friends. See you next year again!!! - YV5MBX

Best ever JA opening in SP test – but no VK this year. This is our best score good activity.  Our special event callsign helped for so many QSOs - YZ500A

Thanks to all concerned in running the contest.  Sorry that my receive antenna is not very good. - ZC4LI

Was logged into DX Cluster so pse treat as check-log.  Thanks for fun event. 73/HNY - Wilbert ZL2BSJ - ZL2BSJ
