Results, Eighth Annual (2003) Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge

The eighth running of the Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge was held on December 27th and 28th. Conditions were improved for many of the stations in the contest over the past few years. This indicates that 160 meters will soon recover from the recent solar maximum and generate some of the exciting openings we all remember from the first few contests. The number of logs received continues to grow – with 368 logs received. This is yet another 10 percent jump from last year. This is almost too exciting for us here in Boring, Oregon. We would like to thank you all for making this a successful event, and for doing your part in recruiting more activity. Let’s see if we can break 400 logs next time.

Last year, we reported that only 28 of GM3POI’s 390 QSOs were with stations in North America.Clive wasn’t able to participate this year, but when we look at the log from G3BJ, we find 141 QSOs out of 423 with North America – and that was after running out of operating time before the band closed in the morning. This certainly is a strong indicator that good conditions are coming back.

VY2ZM (K1ZM operator) was once again head and shoulders above all other scores. In fact, Jeff leveraged his excellent QTH and antenna setup, multiplied by the QRP bonus to set a new score record with an amazing score of 9,548 points! Second place went to N5IA, who posted a very strong score from New Mexico.

Long time 160 meter addict Earl Cunningham, K6SE, posted the top low power score from his portable QTH in the Californian desert. Coming in second place in the low power category was another 160 meter legend, KV4FZ.

The tightest competition is once again found in the high power category. FM5GU used his extra distance from a population center to beat out RA1ACJ and G3BJ, who both had more than 60 more QSOs. Several North American stations made it into the top ten, including N6RO from the west coast. Once again, it appears that the scoring method in this contest goes a long way to set a level playing field. One exception were conditions in the southern hemisphere, which did not enable VK3IO, VK6VZ/6 or ZL3IX to make enough QSOs to be competitive this year.

In the multi-operator category, top score honors went to the team at W2GD who worked an amazing 588 stations, and had the highest grid total at 274. KH7X had the second highest score, followed by VE3OSZ who ran low power.

We received 362 logs, which is up about 10 percent from last year. About 330 of these were submitted electronically. Many thanks to K1PX who entered the paper logs into the computer. Most of you sent them in using the Cabrillo format, and let the robot respond. This is really helping improve the accuracy of these results.

The date for the next running was complicated by having Christmas fall on the same day as the contest. We ran a poll on the topband mailing list, and the consensus was strongly in favor of running the event on the weekend before Christmas. So, the ninth running of this great event will be on December 18^th and 19^th.You can find complete information, including the rules and sponsored plaques at our website http://www.kkn.net/stew/.

Don't miss the soapbox section of this write-up after the scores – including KB5NJD who won the plaque for the “best whine”. N6KB also had a strong whine entry, but did not make the necessary 75 QSOs. The judges almost awarded him the plaque anyway, since he also whined about not making 75 QSOs, but in the end, they had to follow the rules.

There was extremely heavy QRN during the middle third of the night due to local storms. Fortunately,things became quieter afterwards. The good openings to North America 
were a surprise. - 4X3A
 
Best score so far with a storm centered just west of 
Kansas City at 1 hour before dusk it took all night to 
move across the state. Felt like a big gun with the 1/4 
wave vertical this year and the new beverages (N0TT design) 
did great. Some stations not there then s9 plus when switching in the right one. 
Was very pleased to work several EU including
RA, G, LY, YZ, DJ, OZ, EI, GM, SM but conditions 
were tough and every DX QSO was a challenge. 
Was pleased to get a call from ZL and especially 
my best DX VK6VZ who took probably 15 minutes 
to help me get the grid exchange right finally, 
Thanks STEVE. Writelog says 10,704 miles. 
I heard a couple JA but never got an exchange. 
After fixing my 1000mp rig of clicks this year, I was 
much more aware of other peoples.. Any cures for 
the IC775 out there? Oh yea.. another peave.. why 
do stations post their GRID on the cluster and the 3830 Form?

Had to be part time due to family holiday social scene. UK closes from 12/23 thro
01/05/2004 this year so lots of family visiting.
Highlight has to be hearing N6RO for 5-mins 0825z 1828 Khz clg CQ but not able to
raise him.Our S/R was 0821z, first West Coast for over 12-months. - G3LZQ
 
Like last year hard going on QRP, but pleased to work at
least one VE. Lots of activity, this contest is getting

With force 9 gales here through the night I had to lower
the antenna to 75 feet. Wow was it moving ! I had
problems hearing US again even with beverage at 300 deg
Must try a loop. Great fun though, just fell asleep for

Conditions were quite good for this year's SPDXC. Almost didn't
enter because we had to put our 13 year old Chow-Chow dog, Basia,
to sleep earlier Saturday morning. Decided to dedicate this contest 
to this puppy who watched me working so many contests over the years.
It was a fun contest with 100 Watts working 23 countries. The best
DX was 4X3A (20 points) and KH7X (16 points). Managed to work 29
Europeans (11 to 15 point range) and 27 W6/W7/VE7 8 pointers. 
If this year's SPDXC is any indication, 2004 will be a great year
for 160 Meters. Wishing you many Topband QSOs in 2004.

Sure is tough to listen to the right coasters working one 
European after another all night, when we sit here in the 
dummy load of the US and are happy when we can work
a station in another state. Only Europe opening was 
30 min long at their sunrise.

Very part-time operation (7 hours, including a couple hours during
full daylight at the end) with transmit inv-L only for receive. 
Pretty quiet, with plenty of Left Coast and some Europeans worked.
I have a very nice receive antenna collection, all stored in boxes 
and partially assembled in the garage. I need to find some time to
put them up!
The rules still need to be changed to give the double and quadruple
points to the stations that **hear** and **work** the weak stations,
rather than to those who simple make themselves weak. It's the 
"Topband DX Challenge", not the "Topband QRP Challenge".

OK OK, so this wasnt the best Stew Perry that I have ever had.. but hey, 
look at what I had working against me! Thunderstorms from start to finish,

to reconstruct my log, a holiday riot started by my neighbors because of 
the distortion on their TV screens while trying to watch Christmas DVD's 
and oh yeah, the dog ate my coax! But hey, I am not complaining! Just 
another day in paradise... Would I like some cheese with my whine? no 
thanks. Do I wish that Stew Perry happened twice a year? you bet!

Shortly before the contest I heard a discouraging weather forecast
for thunderstorms. Then finally in W7EW's email announcement, some
hope, a plaque for "Best Excuse/whine from log with > 75 entries."
Finally I might come out on top in at least that catagory. I was
ready with complaints about the contest time constraints favoring
East Coast stations. But noooooo! The QRN Sunday morning was so
bad, I couldn't even make the requisite 75 QSOs! - N6KB
 
Results were a bit disappointing this time. Fewer QSOs than last
year and the year before. I never even heard JA or our east coast.
I did manage a QSO with KH7X though, so my record of working Hawaii
remains intact :-)
My motorized tuning capacitor on the big vertical worked well,
allowing me to peak the antenna in the sub-ranges above and below
the DX window.
I wonder if at least some of the midwest and eastern big gun ops
were working from home setups rather than club stations. Signals
just didn't seem as robust as during the ARRL 160 CW.
Signals were thinning out at midnight, so I knocked off for a few
hours of sleep. Didn't seem worth staying up for the returns
available. Still had a fun time though, and made my goal of at
least 100 QSOs. Finished with 106 after deducting two dupes.
Now for the CQ WW 160m CW to try again :-)

What a great contest! Despite being "committed" to some family/friend activities at some of the best operating 
times, I was able to sock in 8.5 hours in this contest. 127 Q's, tons of S&P, lots of CQ's too.
Minuses: Attempt at best complaint -- Shack is unheated; weather near freezing at night now. Was working on my 
CW-computer interface, and left it at work. I was using a straight key (yes, straight key) for the entire 
contest. Fingers were getting numb from cold. It's hard to log and send CW with straight key at same time. Sorry 
for the rotten CW sometimes, folks. Sometimes there was a shiver in there. My wife doesn't like the "added 
radials" going over the lawn. Strong signals reveal interesting artifacts in my rig's passband.
Pluses: K7RAT as first QSO, good low-noise conditions, great loud signals (N6RO -- s9+40dB all the time). 
Patient operators. Learning to type one-left-handed. Daylight between opening and last part of contest is good 
time to resolve issues with a marginal antenna. Got to work K9DX, twice. Precipitation may have improved my 
ground. Some interesting make-do for my antenna fixes. I'm so READY for Straight Key Night!

Don't think I heard Alaska. Seems like there were times when all the "new" stations to work were sp'ing; hard to 
get a run going from the east coast with 100w and my current antenna. 
Preparation: Have a G5RV up at about 60'. Turned it into a top-loaded Marconi by shorting the feed coax at the 
base, added four 124' radials over the ground, feed point a well casing sunk 250' deep into the hill. Thought 
the tuner in the shack would be reasonable, but moved to an outside tuner during daylight -- Voltage fed at the 
base through a temporarily-housed-in-plastic-box MFJ949 tuner at the base. Got a good 1:1.1 match at a chosen 
spot of 1817MHz. 
Next time:
More-better ground system. Maybe a trip to Boeing surplus for some radiating material.

Good conditions this year for my favorite HF contest. Started with 5W for 5 Qs but
conditions changed and switched to 100W w/FT-847. Ant is 88ft EDZ with coax shorted
and fed as a top-loaded wire. Hope to have BIG loop next year. Thanks for FB 'test. - W5USJ

Since stations get a 2x bonus for working QRP contacts, how about modifying the exchange in future years so that QRP stations are identified -- maybe e - K6EI

Another fun challenge and nice change-of-pace from the holiday
events. The contest always brings back memories of a really good
guy and pioneer, Mr. 160. I have a QSL card from Stew, W1BB,
which I treasure. It's dated Jan 7, 1981. His personal comments
are scrawled in red ink on the back side. My contest comments:
might I suggest a slightly different scoring method. The 4-2-1 
power category multiplier could apply in reverse, as well.
Therefore, a QRP-QRP contact would be a multiplier of 4 X 4,
or 16. A QRP-HIGH or HIGH-QRP would be a multiplier of 1 X 4, 
or 4.  Likewise, a LOW-HIGH or HIGH-LOW contact 1 X 2, etc.
An additional identifier might be required in the exchange
though, such as H, L, or Q.

This was a family entry with Steve, VE3SMA (son) and Bob, VE3OSZ
(father). Propagation was much better than last year's. We had
good openings to Europe and to the west coast. Best DX worked were
OM3TZQ, LY3UM and RA1ACJ. - VE3OSZ

GREAT CONDX THIS YEAR! EUROPE WAS GOOD COPY ALL NIGHT LONG
AND EVEN MANAGED TO WORK A FEW STATIONS ON THE WEST COAST.
STILL, SOME STATIONS DID NOT COPY MY QRP SIGS - TRIED HARD
TO WORK EA6BF AND W7WA. NEVER HEARD AFRICA, KH6/VK/ZL.

Thank God for those who observe the DX window and those who do the
W8JI key click mod to their FT 1000MPs. - K5RX
 
Operated from the salt lake bed again and unlike last year when I lost
the balloon in high winds, the wind was calm. I used an IC-756Pro2 in
the contest this year. Noticed many chirps and birdies due to the
receiver's IMDDR3 not being as good as some other radios. Using 6 dB
of attenuation resulted in an occasional chirp/birdie and with 12 dB
of attenuation no more chirps/birdies were heard during the contest.
The QTH is so far from any other ham that BDR was never a problem.
The QTH is worth at least 10 dB with the soil conductivity much better
than sea water, so I took advantage of the X2 multiplier and ran the
Pro2 barefoot. Condx were much better that the ARRL 160 earlier in
the month. Farthest DX was VK6VZ/6 (Steve had a really good signal).
About 15 JAs were worked - some of them were quite strong, but it was
obvious that not many JAs were active in the contest. The guys from
the Caribbean area (KV4, PJ2, FM5, ZF2) were quite strong. A big
surprise was having KH7X call me well before his sunset when he was
quite weak. When I heard him later on, his signal was BIG! My big
disappointment was to find out via e-mail from EI6BT when I arrived
back home after the contest that he heard/called me at around 0800Z.
It turns out that at 0800Z I powered down for 1/2 hour to refuel the
generator and have a bite to eat! Jerry, I hope we can make it in the
CQ WW 160. Other than fighting the sandman, the contest was great

I paticipate on LowPower SingleOp. The condition was btter than last year. 
But it was not the best. I could here only wast coast stations.
This year I built my new balcony antenna. It was 3/8ramuda full size vertical.
I tested 2 type antenna, 1/4wave vertical and 3/8wave vertical, switched it. 
The 3/8wave vertical was better than abou 2 s-units 1/4wave vertical.
And I could not get answer with usig my 1/4wave vertical and I changed my antenna 
to 3/8wave vertical, I could get answer.
This yesr, the condition was better than last year, But not the best. 
Jpanease top gun said, that he could hear W0YK at 15:30 local time!!
But I could heard no east coast stations. - JE1SPY

i put forth a major effort for the homebrew award!
found out about it a week ago, what could i put together?
transmitter was easy, 6ag7 xtal osc, 6L6 driver and my standard
805 pa tuned to put out 100 watts.
a receiver was a bit more difficult: i had a 6sn7 pullen mixer
and 6c5 high freq oscillator with two rf stages (6sn7 cascades)
so the front end was ok, but usually i use bc453 tuneable IFs -
what did i have for a receiver back end? wait! i have for the AWA
party a regen rx for 80m, just pad down the throttle control and
add 60 turns to the regen coil and now i have a stable insensitive 
450 khz detector and bfo and audio - a 10 khz wide no filtering
160 meter receiver!

Conditions were very poor with one way skip at both
sunrise and sunset periods. For the first hour after
sunset only worked one station in North America but the
band improved in the second hour. Lots of QSB and
signals I couldn't work but great fun as always. - VK6VZ
 
My first participation at this contest. Operated
occassionally while refurbishing an old Computer Power 
Supply for amateur use. Made it 11x across the pond 
with 2x57ft dipole @60ft with only 75 Watts out of a K2/100. 
Thanks for the good ears by the state side operators. 
K9DX, K1HTV and 4X3A heard well, but could not grab their
attention. What a difference it makes 160m in Europe in 
comparison to my couple of years in W6-land. See everybody

My first 160m contest attempt and probably the last one from my home QTH ! 
Despite receiving antennas each QSO turned out as a fight against line noise...
The receiving antennas did help (the L provided a stable 9+20dB S-meter reading)
but in only one direction, the only one where I could have some attenuation
on the line white noise - Despite my EME-training, the DSP, Spectran and all
efforts to find the best antenna combination, it quickly became obvious that I
was deaf like a stone ! 
No JA, JT, FM, VK and only 5 NA stations in the log. Feel sorry if you called
me... Gave-up at 3:50 UTC with lot of frustration hearing others working W's
that I could not even see on the Spectran monitoring!
Unfortunately,think that for me 160m will remain a quick "mult-booster" 
in 6 bands contests - F6IRF

I used my 75ft linearloaded vertical with 2 elevated radial. 7 hours into the contest 
a 35 mph wind gust broke the top of the vertical. The top 15 feet hung straight down. 
CA stations would no longer answer my calls tho I could still hear them. Even so it was 
a fun outting. No great DX. Conditions seemed better for the guys up north.
I could hear New England working EU but never hear a signal from across the pond.
It was good to hear everyone. Will try again next year.
