The seventh running of the Stew Perry Topband Distance Challenge was held on December 28th and 29th. Conditions were still in the doldrums, but activity continues to grow. Looking over the logs, you can see that there are pretty much 3 different contests going on - one in Europe, one in the USA, and one everywhere else. There were very few QSOs crossing either pond. Would you believe only 28 of GM3POI's 390 QSOs were with stations in North America? I can remember hearing Clive's signal an hour before sunset here in Oregon during the sunspot minimum.

VY2ZM (K1ZM operator) was head and shoulders above all other scores. Not only was he one of the few stations to be able to cross the pond for any significant number of QSOs, but he was doing it with QRP.

The top three high power scores are from different continents. Mike, KH6ND took advantage of his high average point per QSO figure to make the most of his 201 QSOs. Mike's best DX was with Laurent, FM5BH, the second place score. It seems that Laurent has made some significant improvements in his station over the past few years and has an excellent signal. His best DX was with ZS6UT - who didn't submit a log, but only appeared in one other log - K9DX. The third place high power score went to GM3POI, who edged out the guy who wrote the book on Top Band - ON4UN.

In the Low power category, Bob, GU4YOX handed out rare Guernsey QSOs to the deserving and took first place. Second place went to W0AIH with more QSOs, but a lower point count. G4VGO, another Bob from the UK, had the third place low power score.

As already mentioned, VY2ZM, dominated the QRP category. Milt, N5IA had the second place score - taking advantage of his distance from the main activity. Milt also had one of the more spectacular QSOs in the contest - working VK3IO at a distance of 13,422 kilometers. Third place went to N0TT. Both N5IA and N0TT had fewer QSOs than Pat, N8VW who finished 4th, but the distance scoring overcame Pat's advantage.

In the multi-operator category, top score honors went to K7CA running the QRP category.

John, K9DX received the plaque for the most QSOs, and VK3IO and G0IVZ both get the best DX plaque, working each other.

We received 326 logs, which is up about 10 percent from last year. About 300 of these were submitted electronically. My eyes thank you very much. Most of you sent them in using the Cabrillo format, and let the robot respond. This is really helping improve the accuracy of these results.

The Eighth running of this great event will be on December 27th and 28th.  You can find complete information, including the rules and sponsored plaques at our website http://www.kkn.net/stew. The sunspots are starting to go away, and we really expect a big explosion in the scores when all of this activity can hear each other.

Don't miss the soapbox section of this write-up after the scores.

Thanks again for all of the participation.  See you on the Top Band this winter.

Plaque Winners

The following 18 plaques will be awarded as shown in the following table. We did not have an entry for the VK5AX memorial "plaque" - for top score with pre-1960's valve technology. This award (sponsored by VK6VZ) was an original Official Flying Doctors Service of VK baseball hat. If you qualify for this award for the 2002 running, please let the BARC know and we will correct this list. Otherwise, this award will be available for the next running of the contest.

Hats off to Lew, W7EW, who administers the plaque program. Your plaques should be in the mail before XMAS.

Conditions appeared to be excellent, but many I called didn't hear me. There seemed to be much less activity than in past years. I took a break from 0205 to 0240 on 29 December. In order to get 1 point credit for stations that didn't give locator, I had to trick the software by entering my own grid square (KM71) as if it was received. This was done for 4 QSOs with:  LZ8T, F5LQ, UA3YBB, EA8AK. Please recalculate my score.  I'm sure the above (1468) is not correct. - 4X3A

First time out in the Stew Perry Challenge. I enjoyed it tremendously and was surprised to be called by VK6HD, S9SS, VR2BG and a few other nice ones. No USA or Canada in the log as usual on the lower bands. I heard NB1B rather well but only got 2E? from him. I guess being at 64 degrees north (KP04ke) has some drawback. But this was compensated with the nice points I got for working continental European stations - most were worth 4 or 5 pts per QSO. I will be back next year probably with a vertical antenna as well as the inverted dipole I used now. I might even ad a couple of beverages for listening. - 7S2E

VERY BAD CONDITION , SIGNAL WERE RATER WEAK EVEN FROM BIG GUNS , ALSO NIGHT WITH RAIN DIDN'T HELP AT ALL , TO  MUCH QRN SO SOME SIGNALS COULD BE NEVER HEARD TO GET COMPLETE CALL THIS WAY WILL APOLOGIZE TO THOSE STATION WHO HAVE CALLED WITHOUT SUCCESS ! CU NEXT YEAR AGAIN , HOPE IN BETTER CONDITION ! - 9A5Y

Only worked for a couple of hours.  Very fun though.  I have never done any 160 contesting before.  I will definitely have to work on my low band antenna - AD6WL

Just couldn't get fired up this time.  - AE9B

AJ6T and K1VW multi-op at K1VW QTH in Connecticut FN31. KW with two element inverted L plus Beverages. Very disappointed at abysmal conditions-weak signals and high noise. Failed installation of new Bev in the marsh at the start of the contest got us off to a late start. - AJ6T

Vy gd to wrk in this contest with my little stn, abt.5W out - DL1LAW

Test for CQWW160. Using an old medium wave broadcast antenna, a 96 meter high vertical. TX worked very well, but RX difficult.  Best QSO: At 0609 KL7RA called in to say HNY. - DL6RAI

IC706MKIIG 60W - LONG WIRE - F6FJE

FIRST TIME I TOOK PART IN THIS TEST HAD VY FUN , WILL JOIN AGN NEXT YEAR SURE! VY 73 AND HNY TO ALL ! DENIS - F6HHR

Could only spend a few hours this year however conditions seemed to be good early onl - G0IVZ

ONY 6 HRS OPERATION BUT ENJOYABLE. TKS - G3TJE

[Creating this Cabrillo file manually took almost as much time as I was on the air for the contest]. The TBDC is an excellent event. The simple exchange format is great. If only I had a decent top-band antenna/low noise QTH at home! - G3TXF

Rig Elecraft K2 5W Ant 30ft vertical. Not really a serious entry, but once started I realised I was duty bound to put in an entry! My top band set up is far from ideal, having a very small plot in an urban location. I also have a high local noise level which was very bad on Saturday which didn't help. By I had problems getting some stations to hear my QRP signals, and it is apparent some have far better receivers than others. - G3YMC

Condx Fair but the NA path was not very good. Why not make the exchange 6 letter grid square then the distance can be calculated accurately per Q - GM3POI

My first SP entry. Had loads of fun stringing out a beverage to 300 deg an hour before the contest. I nearly fell off my seat when KL7RA called me! Pleased to give GU to the deserving. Tks for your patience! 73 hope to see you next year. Bob - GU4YOX

I participate on LowPower SingleOp. The condition was very poor this year. My score  was 1999year 466, 2000year 326, 2001year 660 and this year was
only 76 points.! I could not contact with U.S.A. stations. When the sunset time of JA1 area, I could hear a few U.S.A. station, and I called them but I could not get answer from them. When the sunrise time of U.S.A. west coast, I was looking forward to U.S.A. signal, but I could hear them. My 160m antenna is on my balcony of my small apartment in the urban area. My antenna is only 10m length fishing rod. But It has 40 radials in my small balcony which like many lat nets (hi). Almost of my ham friends who look at my small fishing red antenna say, "I can't believe why you can QSO with many DX stations with using such like small poor antenna & 100W from like this location (amount of buildings)." I attach a photo of my fishing rod antenna in my balcony of my small apartment. I took a photo with my antenna & my child.  - JE1SPY

Condex for US was so bad. See you again next! - JE1TSD

Great Contest. Rest 22:10-10:10. E-mail;jh4uyb@jarl.com - JH4UYB

TERRIBLE FLU STRUCK...BAD ENOUGH WITH OUT IT. PTL IN 2003 - K0UK

Used a G5RV up a few feet with an IC756Pro Heard lots more than I could work, including ON4UN and FM5BH - K1EP

My first Stew-Perry.  As a 160m relative newbie, a great way to get my feet wet (immersed!) on top band. - K2YWE

The Stew is always a fun event even if propagation was down from last year. Much better to be on the East coast (W4) versus Midwest (W9), hah!  - K4JA

Had fun burning the cobwebs out of the 160 inverted L antenna. - K4SV

CONDX GOOD, NOISE LEVELS LOW, BUT I STILL HEAR MUCH MORE THAN I CAN WORK. I THINK TX ANT IS WARMING THE OVERHEAD CLOUDS! - K6DGW

How about including power level category in the exchange so that operators can tell which contacts are going to be worth the QRP bonus? - K6EI

4.5 watts out to sloper.  Not a big signal! - K6M

I Didn't hear as many stations this year as last, perhaps conditions were poorer, or my noise level higher.  Ran 100W to 40' tall Inverted L. - K6NR

During the day Saturday while I was setting up the trailer and the antenna at my dry salt lake bed QTH, winds were calm.  The balloon flew with the antenna perfectly vertical. Just before sunset (0048Z), the mostly cloudy skies cleared and it looked like it would be a nice night.  Less than two hours later, that all changed! I started the contest at 0100Z Saturday evening, intending to put in the 14 hours of allowed operating time by 1500Z which happens to be exactly at sunrise at my salt lake portable QTH. The contest started well, with condx appearing to be good with over 100 QSOs logged in the first 1-1/2 hours while running the FT-1000mp barefoot. One of the highlights was having KH6ND call me well before set.  Another highlight was working friend K7BV in Newington, CT. Many other east coast stations were worked and had good signals, and I felt that condx might even improve as the night wore on. Then Murphy struck in the worst possible way.  After about 1-1/2 hours into the contest, the SWR on the balloon-supported vertical went up to as high as 3:1 (it normally is about 1.2:1).  I took off the headphones and the reason was obvious -- it was windy and the antenna was probably far from vertical! I logged a few more QSOs and then at 0243Z the receiver went dead. With a flashlight, I went out to the base of the vertical and found the cause -- the antenna was lying limply on the ground.  No balloon was at its end.  The 50-lb test fishline I used as a top insulator at the balloon had come loose in the strong winds.  For all I know, the balloon may have gone up into the stratosphere before it burst and came down in Colorado (the winds were from the southwest). I tied the "top" of the antenna to a short post about 5 feet high and was only able to raise N7DD for my last QSO in the contest at 0357Z. I called many other stations, but couldn't even get a "QRZ?" out of them, so I gave up and went to bed. I had planned to inflate another balloon when the winds subsided, but they never did.  In fact, it began to rain which made it even more unpleasant outside of the trailer.  The wind continued to blow all night long with gusts of at least 40 mph that made me worried that the operating trailer would tip over (but it didn't).  Windy and rainy weather was predicted for the night of the Stew Perry, and for a change the weatherman hit the nail on the head! - K6SE

Slim pickins at the end.  Not one JA could hear us and we called many for hours.  Conditions to east coast USA were OK as we made almost 20% of the contacts there.  See you all next year but probably not as a QRP multi entry.  - K7CA

Band conditions were poor for most of the contest.  Still, it was great fun to participate in a Grid based event. - K7RE

FIRST outing for the new FT-817, it worked well :-) - K8CV

Just 3.5 hours of operation. RX antennas in disarray / fallen down. - K8ND

Last year I went to a cocktail party and started 5 hours late and had the highest busted call rate in the world. This year no cocktail party. Conditions were poor for DX, no JA signals heard. This is the first SP with my 9 element array, and it seemed to be doing the job hearing the weak signals. CU next year. John - K9DX

Conditions fair here, no EU worked.  Rig: FT-100MP, Inv L Antenna, 3 one wave beverages. Had the Mayor Daily flu but carried on for the STEW-PERRY!! Thanks for holding the SP.  Will, K9FO, age 72 - K9FO

Wow! I doubled my contacts from last year in about 45 minutes!  I guess the new antenna worked... Best DX was KH6ND and it sounded like I was the only  - KB5NJD

Tough conditions, noise level was S-9+ at times, heard no JA's or Eu's, nothing  from the east coast came through. - KI6IV

Another year at W7RMs, this time used my own call.  Band not as good as past few - KI7Y

Condx were just so-so.  No DX heard and the edges of the continent were tough from here in the middle.  In the age category, I’m 64.  In the short  - KJ5WX

Bazooka across the top of pine trees. - KN4Y ACTIVITY SEEMED MUCH BETTER THAN THE LAST TIME I WAS ON. - KR2Q

This was my first encounter with Stew.  Recovering from a bad cold, I just wasn't up to pulling a late nighter, so I thought I'd hand out a few QRP contacts.  Unfortunately my intermittent power line QRN made an appearance as well. Grid Squares are fun! - KX7L

I was operated from KO15 grid loc (56N 23O) and I was more than 800km away from Ocean. Cndx was not so good!  CU NEXT YEAR - LY7Z

Conditions weren't as sharp as in years past, but I did manage a QSO with FM5BH.  No EU heard and no JA on Saturday morning – slept through the Sunday morning sunrise by mistakenly setting the alarm clock too late.  Duh.  Worked on the RX capabilities and managed to get rid of some in-shack noises and made the RX antenna switching work a lot better.  The additional temporary ("Honest, honey, they're just temporary!") radials did help the transmit efficiency, as well. Pretty much ready for CQ WW CW 160, I guess! - N0AX

The Topband gremlins were out in droves last night: slow, deep QSB; high absorption (unless everyone was QRP?); QRN developing later in the night; I was running 1.5KW to an inverted L with 580ft Beverages in 4 directions. - N1EU

Been in every one of these contests since the beginning. Has become a holiday tradition! Next year will plan for a more intense entry. - N1MD

GOT A LATE START AND QUICKLY NOTICED THAT PARTICIPATION WAS DOWN AND BAND CONDITIONS WERE NOT FAVORABLE - N2CG

Poor condx. The previous day, Eu was vy fb. Noise level started out low but built 73, Howie - N4AF

Condx so-so, operating very gentlemanly... a nice way to end the year. - N4GG

AT 83 I REALLY ENJOY THIS CONTEST ESPECIALLY SEEING HOW FAR EACH CONTACT IS AS i WORK IT. - N4UH

The highlight was working Ron, VK3IO, without any competition. It is amazing how the searchlight works. - N5IA

Woke up just before the end of the contest so I decided to fire up the home station (also operated from W6VIO) - W4EF

Band was very noisy here. One minute a station would be there and the next he was gone. QSB was very fast. Worked 3 EU, 3  KH6 and one JA along with FM. Will be interesting to see what other comment from other sections of the country. 73, Bob - N5RG

Good condx here, but insufficient activity. - N6RK

Had planned a full effort in STEW as well as RAC.  During the last hour of RAC, power line noise 20 over 9 on 160m.  Blanker knocked the noise down, but strong in the towel. Most QSOs were S&P on the loudest sigs.  Looks like I didn't miss much. - N6RO

Condx not so hot here.  Had much better antennas this year, and no DX contacts.  Didn't seem as many stations on this year, maybe due propagation.  Worked almost all I could hear.  Only DX was KH6 and Lost my TX antenna when a mica cap in my matching network failed. So shut down and went to bed early for a change. - N6WG

Local line noise seemed worse than usual.  The traditional fading on the band seemed more pronounced than previously noted.  Big signals would become invisible very quickly, and then return to being big signals again.... - N6ZZ

Went low power this year to keep the frustration level down. - N7IR

I found conditions generally poor. Was hoping for some EU stations but nil. - N7RT

Yuck! Lousy Band conditions. Always next year - N7WA

With good conditions this may have proved to be an interesting contest.  As it was, it was very difficult to find the motivation to continue past 0500z.  I heard RN6BN peak up around 0330z, but then his signal went down sharply and I knew it would be a long night.  Best DX was S58A.  Only other EU was
ON4UN. - N9RV

FIRST TIME FOR ME IN CONTEST. HANDED OUT POINTS LAST YEAR, DECIDED TO TURN IN LOG THIS YEAR. I REALLY LIKE 160M EVEN THOUGH I HAVE LIMITED ANTENNA AND LOW POWER, 100WATTS. STATION EQUIPM: TS-2000 100 WATTS, DX-B SINGLE WIRE SLOPER 34' TO 8'EAST. 73 - N9TF

This was an experiment to see how a balloon antenna played.  We set up the station from scratch on the grounds of Yerkes Observatory, Willams Bay, WI. Results were very encouraging, but even in our supposedly quiet location it was clear that Beverage antennas would have helped immensely. - N9UC

Condx down this year.  No ZS, No 4X, No KH6.  Overall, there did seem to be more activity stateside but less DX. - NB1B

Action kinda slow, fell asleep and missed Sunday morning. - NH7O

After some 125 QSO's and not a single DX station heard, and very few East Coast, it was clear that condx were not wonderful. I went off to do other things - NI6T

Very poor conditions here in North. A lot of Aurora. Managed to catch only a couple of JAs and NA stations. Nice surprise was KL7RA in the evening. Longest Q VK3IO. - OH2BO

Grids make this one interesting. - OH2KI

EVEN WITH QRPP TX OF 1 WATT INTO 30 MTRS LW IS POSSIBLE  TO ESTABLISH A LOT OF NICE CONTACTS THANKS TO EXCELLENT - OK1FCA

Terrible conditions to the East. No VK6HD, and heard just 1 JA. JT1CO was great.  USA: about 75 NA stations worked - lots of very deep QSB, mostly very weak signals. Good thing I had phased Beverages. Furthest west was K0HA, a few W5's in Texas and KL7RA. 45 minutes before my sunrise the HB amp decided to quit with a big bang: a decoupling C in the RF compartment exploded, with the surge (protecting) resistors. I repaired it the same day. Maybe I missed the sunrise peak. It is fun as always. 73 John - ON4UN

I PARTICIPATE FOR THE PLEASURE OF THE CW AND TO FIND ALL MY CONTEST FRIENDS. I UTILIZE ONLY THE S&P METHOD. MY SMALL PISTOL IS A OLD FT-757GX AND A QUAD LOOP 80M IN A BAD QTH. MY AGE IS 67 AND I HOPE COME BACK AGAIN IN 2003. HNY 2003 AND BEST 73 TO ALL! - ON6TJ

Finished the rx-antennas just in time for the contest, pity there was no noise to check them out...PA3AAV. - PA3AAV

Was just for the fun of it - so it's more of a check-log - Was not able to spend too much time on the air - Thanks for organizing and hope to find more time next year as I did enjoy myself!!!! 73/Herman - PA3BFH

Nice contest. More challenging exchange than with some other contests. Next year again! - PA5KT

Conditions were really poor here. Nearby thunderstorms pushed the QRN to S9+, giving no chance to those running QRP. - PY2FUS

I like USA robots!  They are almost as smart as your current President. - S56A

Looks like all USA was using QRP!       - SP5DRH

Highlight - JT1CO answered on second try!!! Just 5 watts here and 25 m high dipole. Amazing! - UA2FZ

I set a new record in this contest: the lowest score that I have made in all 7 SPTBDCs to date! Heard nothing from the west coast and worked no EU stations. Things can only improve next year. - VE3OSZ

Conditions odd, many Eu heard but no response! Several west coast worked on Eu beverages or better on south south west beverages rather than NW especially W7's in Wa - VE3PN

This is a checklog as I had packet cluster connected. I know I'm in a minority of about one, but it seems to me that packet should be permitted. I am firstly a DXer and secondly a contester. Therefore, I'm not prepared to take the chance of missing a 'new one'. Having packet makes not a ha'purth of difference to my score. Conditions pretty terrible - most of the few Europeans I could hear were coming from due South! 73 Roger - VE3ZI

My first Stew Perry, I hope I got the scoring and the distance calculations OK.  - VK3IO

Operated from the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse at most extreme south-western point of Western Australia.  Conditions were terrible, but the full-size vertical over seawater helped. Only 7 QSOs using LP (60 - 80W), but lots of fun getting them. CU NXT YR! - VK6VZ

HIGH SKY NOISE + WEAK SIGNALS = MAYBE NEXT YEAR - VY1JA

ONLY WORKED FOUR HOURS OF THE CONTEST SUNDAY MORNING AND FOUND CONDX TO BE POOR WITH QRN. NO DX OPENINGS AT ALL FROM HERE SUNDAY SUNRISE. MAYBE NEXT YEAR! - VY2MGY

HAD FUN DESPITE CONDX - NICE TO SEE OLD FRIENDS AGAIN 73 K1ZM - VY2ZM

VERY ENJOYABLE CONTEST.  LOOK FORWARD TO THE ACTIVITY. - W0HW

Threw up an inverted-L with 2 elevated radials with the apex about 25' high on a city lot in a suburb of New York City where we were visiting relatives.  A bit marginal, but I still really enjoyed my first SP. I could hear great, but many of the distant stations could never hear me.  Did manage to work a few European and Caribbean stations. - W0YK

Oh well!  My real grid square is CN83.  Sorry about that. - W2VJN

Put up a 60 ft inverted-L for the occasion with 2 quarter wave radials. This worked better than the old inv-V, but sure did miss that salt water ground.  Did hear some EU.  DF2PY was a true s9, but he was unable to hear my 100 watts.  Very few west coast signals were heard.   And the QSB was rapid and deep all night long...seemed like the ionosphere was shifting changing and unstable.  When I was not quick and snappy with exchanges I missed some QSO's to fading.  It was great to be QRV from home on 160m for the TBDC again.  Am looking forward to next year’s event already. - W4SAA

Sorry to those I couldn't pull out of the noise. QRN was very bad at my location.  Hope to have better ears next year - 73 de Mike, W4EF @ W6VIO

Any band...as long as it has a "6" in it. - W7AT

Cndx sucked ..... Lost interest. - W7GG

The band was quiet but propagation seemed mixed at my end. Nonetheless, a very enjoyable way to spend some time on the radio. - W8RU

Low activity, lousy conditions.  Omni 6+, 4-sq. - WA9IRV

Hi all. Enjoyed the contest, decided to participate at the last minute (Saturday), after I saw it listed on the ARRL website. Used my TS-570D(g) and DX-77 vertical, with CT logging. Next year maybe an antenna for 160! - WB2ART

First Stew Perry TBDC. Yaesu FT-817 QRP xcvr to 5-MHz OCF 28-ga insulated wire stealth antenna up 40 feet in trees next to I-75 in downtown Atlanta industrial area. SGC SG-237 autotuner. - WB6BWZ

This is my #5 TBDC contest - YU1RA

ITS MY FIRST ATTEMPT. SORRY HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO COUNT SCORE... - LY7A

My second Stew Perry Contest with the Canadian Marconi BH30 amp. 73 Joe VO1NA  - VO1NA

Just a few words for some comments about spots on the DX cluster during the Stew Perry last night. I was really sad, when I checked the Spots Data Base on the OH2AQ DX Cluster, and when I saw that someone did use my call spotting me several time, writing stupidities and when I read the comment of some of the guys! I NEVER used autospot, not before, not in the future and I always have been fair and honest on the bands and will always be. That's a pity that things like this can happen, I am really sorry. Anyway, I took a short part in the contest, not too good conditions this side, only 100 QSO in the log and not a single US station. See you soon on the band, and Happy 2003 to you all - 88 F8BPN
