Good morning Eric - glad to see some traffic here. First of all it
would be helpful to know what interface you have available for the
demi rigs. Not sure if you are in the buying mode yet or not..
Either way my suggestion is to go with the common IF (all of my
transverters are set up this way - it has been great. I use my
222,902,1296 and 3456 on several different rigs with no troubles.
All of my transverters have the common IF internal - lately Steve
has been offering the HIF option which is external to the
transverter. Either way it is usually quite easy to get the IF rig
power down to 10W or less and use the common IF - I have had good
results with the IF power down to 2W with the 10W option.
To start out with you need to find out what PTT signals you have
available form the IF rig. In the case of my '706 mkIIg I use HF
send for the 222 transverter which goes low while transmitting on
28Mhz and below. Transverters are typically assembled PTT low.
Just find the pin in your IF rig and test to verify that it changes
upon XMT - and it should work fine. My '290RII is a little different
in that I had to locate a pin internally that provided a TTL high
signal for XMT. I brought out the connection with a flat sound card
lead to an RCA jack which has worked great for a few years now.
Changing the transverter between PTT low and TTL is quite simple
(just move to the pad connected to D5 or C58,R31 clearly marked as
PTT and TTL in the case of the 1296-144) which works great.
As for remote mounting - not sure if you mean (outside) or just some
distance away from the IF rig. In the common IF mode it is quite
easy to remote the transverter - keeping the WX out is the bigger
issue. I have used a NEMA 3R enclosure with some success and mounted
the transverter 25 feet away from the shack. My biggest concern is
the temperature inside the enclosure ... I have had troubles with
frequency drift while the transverter is warming up just in the
rover. (I typically power them up at the start of a contest and
leave them on for the duration). Unless you are going to have some
big runs of feedline at 902 and 1296 - I wouldn't be too concerned.
I have worked stations that are running 100ft or more at 1296 ..
certainly not the best setup but it can work. (I do hate to see the
loss however as well so I can see the concern here). Hope this helps
a little - glad to see some more stations on the bands!
73,
Matt
