Hi Kerry,
My secretary just alerted me to the fact that we are not in school on
Friday, March 8th. Any other day that week would be great.
Here is the summary about Deep Creek that you requested:
Deep Creek is an elementary school located in the town of Boring, Oregon.
We are in a rural community surrounded by green, rolling hills with a
magnificent view of Mt. Hood. We have 385 students attending kindergarten
through fourth grades. Recently we have been designated as an
"Exceptional School" by the Oregon Department of Education, based on data
including student performance, behavior and character. We have strong
parent and reading volunteer programs, which help support our excellent
academic program. We pride ourselves in providing a safe and nurturing
environment which fosters respect, responsibility and results.
We are all excited about our upcoming connection with the expedition 4
crew of astronauts on the International Space Station. The entire school
is engaged in activities that will help us to learn all we can about NASA
and the station. We have a large mural in our main hallway commemorating
this event, and are providing articles in our weekly newsletter keeping
our parents, school district and community informed about preparations for
this special day. In addition, students are accessing many apporopriate
websites on the internet, and each class has prepared questions to ask of
the astronauts. We have scheduled a "practice" with parent Larry Tyree
and his ham radio crew so that students will know what to expect on that
day. We plan to have all of our students listen to the inteaction with
the astronauts. Larry has also offered to conduct a session with a small
group students who are exhibiting unique interest in the radio process.
We are extremely grateful to ARISS and everyone involved for providing us
with this opportunity. It is an event that will create special memories
for all of us for a lifetime.
